Visionary
Goosebumps crawled up her spine. Someone is watching me! Sarah couldn't shake the feeling as she stepped out of the shower and began drying herself. Sliding into her pajamas, she scanned the room looking for ... What? This is my bathroom in my house. What could there possibly be? she asked herself for the hundredth time as she eyed the vent – looked there – and glanced at the shuttered window. Moving into the bedroom, she walked to the drapes. Pulling them aside, she peered out into the darkness. "There," she muttered, noting a flickering glow just at the corner of her eye. It was faint, like a candle flame, and diffuse, like a light in the fog. Turning her head slightly, the luminescence disappeared just as it had before. "Nothings there!" she scolded herself. "It's just my imagination." Sarah turned off the lights and crawled into bed. It shifted temporal planes slightly causing time to stop and the image to freeze, unconsciously lowering the light to reduce the glare on the portal. Fascinating! it thought. Life forms living in only 4 dimensions! In the real multiverse continuum, concepts such as "he" and "she" didn't exist nor did names. Each being was unique and time was as malleable as silly putty (which didn't exist either). I wonder if any form of communication is possible? It could see the images that were inscribed – "words" – and even had started a rudimentary listing but had been unsuccessful in reproducing them. It moved its consciousness, trying to emulate the negative response activity it had witnessed in the subject without success. Wryly, it felt a pleasure response at how impossible it was. I guess that answers my question, it thought as it released the temporal flow and deconstructed the portal. Good night, Sarah. Notes: An entry for the 1/23/10 round of "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" Prompt: Write a story that includes the words: fog, candle, freeze. I've been reading about "string theory" - the current theory about the number of dimensions that really exist. It gave rise to this story. Word Count: 296 Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Please, as long as you're here, leave a comment. Criticisms, thoughts, reactions, yes – even a kind word of encouragement – are all equally welcome Ken
