Get Your Skates on

Pushing herself back into the big old leather armchair, the one that she had rescued from her grandfather's old house after he had passed on, Chrissie pulled the fleece blanket around her shoulders to combat the cold shivers, and took a sip of the steaming cup of cocoa lovingly made by Matt. It's the least he could do, considering the ice rink was his bright idea.

'Never again!' she moaned. 'I told you it was a bad idea.'

Matt shrugged. He hadn't thought it a bad idea when he'd suggested it. It was something different, something that they hadn't tried before. It would be fun, he'd said.
Chrissie thought not, never having mastered roller skates.  But blades on ice? No chance. But Matt's persistent pleas cajoled her into agreement. Reluctantly, she laced her boots and headed for the ice.
At first she had faltered, then, with Matt's support she stayed upright and relaxed a little. Her confidence soared. In fact, she had been quite proud of herself. That was until someone got in her way. She hadn't been able to stop. Matt had realised what was about to happen, but could do nothing.

Crash, bang. Chrissie collided with the oncoming skater. She had put her hands out to break her fall. Snap! The pain shot up her arm.

A trip to the accident and emergency department confirmed her broken wrist. It was strapped up by the sister in a&e and, feeling sorry for herself, Chrissie headed for home with painkillers, instructions to rest, and a sick note for two weeks.

This fun night out had cost her dearly. She would never go skating again.
