WOMEN AND SEA: a sonnet
Why is a woman compared to a sea? Because of common traits that they both share. Woman, tempestuous can sure be she. Though often silent, she can surely flare. Women’s eyes can be unfathomable. They can have a gaze that is vast and deep. They can, like sea, be uncontrollable. They shed salty tears when they cry and weep Of this fact all men are too well informed: Both can be calm and furious at times. “Hell has no fury like a woman scorned”, Thus wrote Shakespeare about feminine crimes. Though men may claim they have mastered the sea, Few would venture to say this of a she. * Written for the “Stories of the Sea” Contest, "Stories of the Sea" M C Gupta 28 January 2010
