VULNERABLE

Vulnerable, you are open to the hurt of the night
when the winds howl and you shiver with fright.
Footsteps on the stairs and you know he's home,
a questionable solace when you are there alone.

Vulnerable, you pretend that you're fast asleep
though memories of other nights begin to seep
into the mind, and then you know it is of no use,
another night enduring physical or verbal abuse.

Vulnerable! Such is the life of a battered wife,
afraid to leave and even more afraid of strife.
White-hot anger shows in his eyes and then
the terror of the night will begin once again.

Vulnerable, you take the first chance to leave.
The wounds will heal, there is no time to grieve.
Run, run, as fast as you can, make a getaway!
Death lies in wait for those who choose to stay.

Vulnerable - alone in a world that only sneers
that you can't make it on your own, your fears
will crush any hope that might have been there.
You cry out that no one will help you or care.

Vulnerable, you feel that there is just no escape
but time alone will tell if you survive that sad fate
of a woman whose strength is now slowly draining.
There is so very little time to live on remaining.
