Escape Clause

Wisps of fog levitated above the dark waters adding to the eerie pall that hung over the dock.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker commanded. Wrapped in a heavy coat with the collar up against the chill, Barnaby's voice seemed to come from thin air.

The group of reporters turned from the car that had pulled up minutes before and focused their attention.

"You see before you a trunk, several lengths of chain, and six padlocks. Please, check them carefully to assure yourselves that they haven't been tampered with in any way."

"Seems genuine," said one.

"I've gone over every link of this chain. It's real all right."

"The trunks solid. Got one just like it at home," another said giving rise to a scattering of titters.

Inside the car, Effrem smiled. This would be his greatest illusion. This is my ticket to fame and fortune, No one had noticed the front trunk handle – where all the chains would pass through – had a fake rivet. One turn of the screw on the inside and the chains will just fall away.

A rap on the window brought him out of his reverie.

"Ladies and gentlemen – the Magnificent Malcourt!"

Barnaby led Effrem to the trunk and helped him in. With a wink, he closed the lid, wrapped the chains through both end handles and secured the padlocks. With the help of four volunteers, he oversaw the trunk moved to the edge of the pier.

"And now," his voice rose, "now – the ultimate escape begins!" With a push, the trunk teetered and then plunged into the cold, dark waters.

As he watched the bubbles rise to the surface, he chuckled "Die! If you do this for me, I promise I'll never ask for anything again."

Barnaby knew of Effrem's secret negotiations to sign with another promoter. We had a deal, Effrem. Together 'til the end.
