Courtesy and Honor

We've all felt what it is like to be treated rudely or to have others demand something of us that they didn't earn, so perhaps we should revisit the qualities and benefits of two little things that seem to be missing in today's society: Courtesy and Honor.

Courtesy: 1. polite or considerate behavior: consideration for other people, or good manners
2. polite or considerate action: something done out of politeness or consideration for another person
3. for sake of politeness: given or done as a courtesy
Synonyms: politeness, good manners, courteousness, consideration, civility, manners, gallantry, gentility

Honor: 1. personal integrity: strong moral character or strength, and adherence to ethical principles
2. respect: great respect and admiration
3. dignity: personal dignity that sometimes leads to recognition and glory
Synonyms: integrity, decency, righteousness, principle, uprightness, scrupulousness, rectitude, morality, character

I explore the meanings of these neglected but high-impact morals and the consequences to our society with their decline in this brief essay:

"Courtesy and Honor [13+].

Excerpts from Courtesy and Honor:

We, as individual citizens, can, in a thousand small ways, promote this thing we call "Courtesy," by doing something as simple as being polite ourselves. By never forgetting to say please and thank you, helping someone in need of assistance, or just offering a stranger a smile or a hello, we lead by example.

Teach your children that praise and respect are earned and go hand-in-hand with Courtesy!

Although, to many, these two small values of Courtesy and Honor may seem trivial compared to more pressing world events, I believe they have a great impact on the outcome of society as a whole, and we should all strive to hold on to and instill these values in future generations, lest we go the way of the Romans, and fall.

In closing, I will just say "Give Courtesy and Honor a try, and see if the smiles you receive in kind, don't make you feel like a millionaire!"

Thanks
Hannah
