His arrival begins this noted verse One town’s hero, another town’s curse The path was started, by his mighty swing In the house he built, Ruth was king Toward his demise, an iron horse did come Bringing grit, fire, determination An everyday man, only God could retire And an everyday crowd he inspired A boy from Frisco did soon join the crew And hit after hit his legend grew Joltin’ Joe the man with a toothy grin Platooned Centerfield win after win In the forties came a small little man Whose heart wasn’t questioned by any fan Behind the plate Yogi sat, titles he won Finished, it would be more than anyone The fifties arrived, and a giant arose A simple man who hit farther than most Mantle’s love of the game, was played with grace He brought upon the great Home Run race Along the way there were many players Whose heroics drew the fan’s prayers Maris, Rizzuto, Howard and Martin Reynolds, Houk, Dickey, Ford and Larsen Tragedy struck when a captain was lost His team battled back regardless of cost Winfield was mighty, Reggie turned the page He electrified on that fall stage Ten years without winning, a fall from grace Donnie Baseball tried to save the face The diamond’s lone sparkle, he played with heart Years began to bridge titles apart Then finally it came, victorious An unselfish team, so glorious A new Captain stepped forth, with pride and fame Dynasty restored, Jeter’s the name A century of might, a century of will All began atop a New York hill Twenty seven rings in one hundred years A legacy worth, millions of cheers
