A New Beginning By Jack Rawlins When I awoke today, one thing had changed about the world around me: it was gone! I was suddenly in a different time and place in a totally new world. Even though I just arrived a few hours ago, I know I’m going to like it here. My journey took forty-one full weeks. Most of the trip, except for a few bumps, was very pleasant. The accommodations were superb and extremely comfortable. The ride itself was like floating in a luxuriant spa with the sound of swishing palms in the background. The end of the trip, though, was a little traumatic. Actually, it was quite painful and messy. I don’t want to tell you what I had to get through to get here. Only a mother would understand. Just before arrival, there was a sudden gush like a water main had burst. I had no concept of time, but I was squeezed into a narrow passage-way and urged forward. I sensed being pushed toward a bright light at the end of a tunnel. Minutes later I was welcomed warmly into a brightly lit room by a group with no sense of fashion, all wearing the same drab gowns and masks. I could tolerate poor taste, but why the masks? I had nothing to rob. They were all bigger than I, but I was not afraid. Though I couldn’t understand a word they said, their tone was gentle and soothing. And I was treated like royalty. They wrapped me in a soft robe from head to toe and crowned me with an ugly little cap I never would have selected. I traveled light, but I did come to this new world with all I needed to survive--if I got a little extra help. I brought with me all my senses: taste, touch sight, hearing, and smell. And I’ve got to tell you I didn’t like the smell of this place. But it didn’t affect my appetite. Their touch was gentle and comforting as they placed me where I could get some nourishment. My instinct to suckle was ready. My first little meal was delicious and I was delighted to find another place to feed only a short distance away. After nine months of solitary confinement, it was nice to be out among others; to get a breath of fresh air; and to stretch my limbs and my lungs. What’s more, everyone was so kind and considerate--especially the one who hugged me to her breast. Yes, I’m going to like it here. I plan to milk my celebrity status as long as possible. Today is the first day of the rest of my life-- and I’m going to make the most of it. ###
