Assignment #1, Lesson 4 Smell The flowery fragrance of Chanel No. 5 drew me towards itself. My nose followed my grumbling stomach alerting me to a coffee being brewed nearby. Scent of French fries invaded her nostrils, making her stomach grumble, half with hunger and half with delight. The scent of freshly baked apple pie beckoned him. The car fumes choked her. Touch The silk scarf let go of her hair. His hand on mine stirred up butterflies in my stomach. The guy brushed past her, knocking her to the ground. His stubble left a scrubby feeling on my cheek. Taste The brownies and ice cream combo made him grow week in the knees. The chocolate melted in her mouth. The orange juice left bitterness in her mouth. He craved for home-cooked food. Sight Her face beamed with the radiance of a newly wed. The children played in the water, kicking it with their feet and splashing on each other. The couple walked hand in hand, whispering and laughing. His light brown eyes were accentuated by the earthy brown shirt he was wearing. Sound The loud, blaring horns irritated her. He whispered sweet nothings in my ear. She could hear the silence. He shouted over the loud music, to be heard. Assignment Part Two The lady on the counter looked at me distractedly and handed the receipt. She wore a uniform, her hair was tied tightly and she wore no lipstick. She told me to go to the next room. The sound of television reached my ears. A new advertisement was showing on the television. The doctor shook my hand firmly. He told me to look carefully. Scent of food came from the mess hall. The custard tasted heavenly. The lady next to me in the metro was reading a book. I smiled at the little kid across me and he smiled back. My friend offered me a chocolate and I thanked her. I heard the sound of an airplane and looked above just in time to see it whizzing by. Assignment #1, Lesson 4 This lesson is designed to stimulate your own creative picture/visual/sense for the rest of the class 1. Create 15-20 examples of your own sensory sentences, incorporating the 5 senses listed above. Use at least three examples of each sense in your assignment. You are welcome to create a series of related sentences including more than one sense. 2. Label the sentences to show which senses you are using in each. Assignment Part Two I am a Sensory Camera!: Goal: To notice what you notice---using your 5 senses as interpretation--and to render it without trying to explain or interpret it with logic. Take a walk, ride a bus, or visit a park and observe your surroundings. Preferably a place with other people. This can be your day at work, at home or school, or when you're running errands. Turn on your brain camera, don't explain the situations you see, just record, using as many senses as possible. Record everything precisely. Don't try to interpret it, or "tell" us what it means: everything will get developed and and fixed later. For now just record the smells, visuals (including colors), sounds, etc you experience while your sensory camera is switched ON. Remember not to tell us what you think or interpret from the scene. You are a machine that observes the surroundings and can relay smells, sight, sounds, tastes, and touch, but you cannot explain your personal feelings in the piece.
