Honorable Mention--3/13/10
Will said, “It‘s time to go. Mom must be asleep by now.” Both brothers had to admit it was a little scary getting from the upstairs window to the branches of the tree. They’d done it before, in daylight, but this time it would be in the dark. “We’ll be grounded forever for this if she catches us.” “But it will be worth it,” Dan said. "You know Mom wouldn’t let us go to this party if she knew.” Their mother had a rule about unsupervised parties. A good rule -- for little kids. These brothers were fifteen and seventeen and didn‘t feel they needed to be supervised. The plan was well made They’d stashed their clothes in the garage earlier in the day, so all they had to do was climb down the tree, go into the garage and change out of their pajamas and then through the hedge to Dave’s house. Will went first because he was the oldest. Sitting on the windowsill he reached out and grabbed the nearest branch. It was harder and scarier than it looked but they had gone too far to turn back now. As he reached the ground he saw the branches above shaking with his brother’s weight. If anyone was looking out the window they would be seen making a break for the garage across the moonlit yard. That was a risky part of it. Apparently nobody was looking out. “I can’t believe we got away with it,” Will said Once safely in the garage they opened the plastic bag to get out their clothes, but there was trash in the bag. That was when the car door opened and their mother got out. “Hello, guys,” she said. “What kept you?” 290 words
