The Pursuit of Happiness

By Indelibleink

Happiness simply wouldn’t come to me,
Even though I prayed that it arrive each day.
This quest was harder than I thought,
But I was so sure that I’d find my way!

It was now clear that waiting would not work,
So, I decided to walk to it instead.
But found I knew not where it was,
Was moving backwards - rather than - ahead.

Determined that happiness I’d soon find,
Snuck up, to catch it by surprise.
But when I did…it ran away,
Seems I’d scared it, by the look in its eyes.

Happiness simply wouldn’t come to me,
So, I decided to walk to it instead.
But when I did…it ran away,

My quest for happiness, it appears, is dead.

Author’s Note: Noting that the quote prompt had a “poetic rhythm” to it, I used the first sentence in the first line of the first stanza, the second sentence in the second line of the second stanza, and the third sentence in the third line of the third stanza. Finally, I used all three sentences in the last stanza; all prompts in blue throughout the poem.
