The Burglar
Rated: E | Fiction | Contest Entry | #1657676
Expect the unexpected when you hear a noise
"Wake up, I heard a noise" Charlotte whispered in Sid's ear with an alarmed voice.

Sid moaned while he slowly woke up. "What? Where?"

"It's down there. Listen!"

Charlotte held her breath, eyes wide open in fear. Sid listened attentively while he sneaked over to the wardrobe fetching his old baseball bat. He could hear it too. Somebody walking over broken glass.

"Call 911" he whispered to his wife, then he went out, trying to make no sound. Sid was not the super-hero type of a husband so he should better wait for the police, but all he could hear were footsteps in the kitchen and a creaking plank from time to time. Obviously the burglar was alone. Sid sneaked his way down, avoiding the creaky steps of the staircase. He would get him with the bat when he passed the staircase on his way to the living room.

When John broke the glass, he tried to avoid loud shattering. He knew that his grandparents were usually fast asleep upstairs. It was a crazy idea to break into their house bringing back the baseball signed by Hank Aaron he had stolen during his visit the day before. But he needed to replace the counterfeit on the mantelpiece before grandpa would find out. John had won the bet he made with his friends, so he needed it no longer. They would not fret about the broken glass, but grandpa was obsessed about his baseball. He would kill him, when he would find out what he have done.

Sid felt his fast heartbeat and he wondered if the intruder might be armed. No sign yet of the police arriving. Now! He saw a shadow sneaking past the staircase! So he slammed his bat at it as hard as he could.
