LONELY OLD MEN
Only the lonely can know What it’s to be alone, With none to give you an ear Whether you sigh or moan. Though the world is always full Of men, women, children; You feel alone when others Treat you as a burden. Loneliness and old age have A common attribute: Often the one who suffers Is weak, helpless and mute. The pain of loneliness is Writ large upon their face. Old men’s eyes do not betray, Of happiness, a trace. • Written in abcb, 7-6-7-6 format * Initially written as entry 494442 (now deleted) for "POEMS ABOUT AGEING" M C Gupta 12 March 2007
