It Was a Cold Dark Night

    Benjamin Gilchrist twas a man that was aged and balding.  He was a man that was hard to get along with.  He lived in a mansion.  He had no children he would call his own.  However, there was a son.  His name was Robert Gilchrist.  Robert loved his dad ever so much but Benjamin wouldn't have anything to do with him.  He has been a child cut off from the family inheritance as it were.  Gilchrist was a lowly man with no aspirations of anything good to happen in his life.  Robert was the best he would and could be to his dad. 

    Years came and went.  There was no one but Benjamin who lived in the house or was there?  One night at the bewitching hour there was a strange noise coming from the basement.  Benjamin payed it no mind at all.  He thought he was hearing noises all along and did nothing about them.  However, it was the wrong thing to do for this night he was going to be visited by the being from the basement.  The thing in the basement was none other than Benjamin's late wife, Laura.  He had buried her in the basement. 

    The crying and moaning got louder and louder for Benjamin.  He covered his ears so he would not hear the crying and the moaning.  However, it didn't stop.  "Benjamin" I have come back for you Laura said to him.  He wouldn't believe it was true. But then he saw the hall light come on without any one being there at all.  He covered himself up in his curtains and sat patiently  waiting for the noise to stop. It got closer and closer to Benjamin's room.  Then there was a knock on the door.  It was Robert to see him. 

    The crying and moaning stopped.  He was relieved to know that it had stopped for right then. he was weary of Robert's intrusion and still was unrelenting.  So, Robert left his dad alone.  That is when the crying and moaning began again.  Benjamin was at a loss of what to do.  He wouldn't believe that the worst was going to happen but it did.  Laura showed herself to Benjamin in his room. 

    He looked at her and she looked at him.  "How could you turn your son away from you like that?'  Laura asked Benjamin.  "He's not my son!" Benjamin said.  He is your son and your lover's son not mine.  Laura had a true love and his name was Aaron.  They made love anytime they could.  Benjamin found out about their affair and had Aaron done away with.  Benjamin promised  him a million dollars to keep quiet about their son they had.  Aaron left after that and went to parts unknown. 

    Laura took the candle sticks with her and the holder she used on Benjamin.  He was left in bed with his head bashed.  Now the mansion remains quiet and alone.  There is no one that ever visits the mansion.  Robert got away from his dad and remained happy for the rest of  his life.  However on a particular night you can hear the screams, the crying and the moaning coming from the mansion that is now all boarded up and alone.
