Jenny posed before the full length mirror. She twirled, the skirt of her prom dress floating around her ankles. It was almost time; Zack would be arriving to take her away for this fabulous evening she had dreamed of for so long. Everything was perfect. Zack would be proud to be with her.
She always loved him from the first time she saw him way back in eighth grade. He was every girl’s dream with curly blond hair, melting blue eyes. In high school he was a star, having enormous success in all sports. Of course he had been dating Amanda, but that was over now. Amanda the shallow little cheerleader. It was a wonder he had been attracted to her at all! Amanda was conceited and fake. Sure, she was pretty, but it’s inner beauty that counts. The clock on her nightstand told her it was time, time to float down the stairs and see the admiration in Zack’s eyes, stand with him by the mantel while Mom took pictures and then -- She heard the car and ran to the window. She saw Zack get out and head for the door. Her day dream ended in tears as she saw him ring the doorbell at Amanda’s house across the street. As Zack and Amanda came out, Jenny sat down on the bed. Her dream prom dress melted away and became old jeans and tee shirt again. Like all her other dreams about Zack, this one was over, too. 250 words
