"Hello, my name is Joe" "Hello my name is Bill, Howard is the last name, my ancestors are one of the early settlers here in Lancaster !" "You don't say." There's quite a crowd here today." "Yes a good turnout. What do you work at Joe?" "I'm in the iron and steel business." "Oh are you?" "Yes, I iron all day and steal all night." "Well I see you have a good sense of humor." Bill notes that Joe didn't truly answer. "Where do you work Bill?" "I have a business on the other side of the city. Truss designs are my line. Actually, doing pretty well, now that the city is building the new hospital." Joe thinks to himself, he wants me to know he landed the bid on the hospital. " That should be good for the economy." "Yes, yes, it opens jobs for many people." Bill replied. They both fidget; they shuffle about from one foot to the other. "Say, do you live around here?" "I've got a room on Isabella," Joe replied— "and you?" "I own a home on Playter Crescent." With that Bill looks around the room, wanting to get away. "Playter Crescent? Nice area! East end, isn't it?" "Say Bill, I'm having a few people over to my room after the meeting, care to join us?" "Love to, but my wife has something else planned; sorry Joe, maybe another time." "Ya, maybe." They stand looking at each other; Bill's eyes circle the room. "Well, I see people are starting to mingle. I guess I'll say hello to a few, See you later Joe." "Sure thing Bill!" Bill turns and walks away, "What a loser", he thinks. He does't know who I am or recognize my name, " Joe watches Bill leave.. A smile plays around his mouth knowing Bill will be in for a big surprise. Later: "And now for our guest speaker it is my pleasure to announce the President of Carter's Iron and Steel Corporation, Mr Joseph Carter, all the way up here from Austin Texas. Let's give a warm welcome to Mr Carter." "Thank you! Thank you and thanks for the warm welcome. It is always a pleasure to be invited to Canada to speak and recruit new people as potential employees. I see a few familiar faces from my last trip here, and I had the pleasure to meet some new faces today. Hello Bill, it was nice to meet you and get to say hello. Bill nods. Thank you all for coming by this afternoon." Joe proceeds on with his speech. The room was silent, as everyone listened intently to Joe's sales pitch. Drawing near the conclusion, he sums up by explaining what type of men and women the company is looking for. "First let me say, we are seeking individuals, who exhibit vision. Vision as to what they can do for and give to the company. We are not looking for self-seeking individuals. We are not interested in people who are interested only in people who live in the "right" place, and have the "right" status. Such people are superficial; In our company it doesn't matter if you have a prominent name, or if you live on the correct side of the tracks. No, what we seek are men and women with vision and determination to improve themselves and the company. Good people are good employees, and good employees come from all walks of life! We expect much and we give our employees much." "I'll be happy to stay around and answer any question; I have invited a few over to my room later this afternoon so I’m looking forward to a pleasant evening. Thank you!" As Joe makes his way down to his seat he glances at Bill, he could see the surprised look Bill sent his way. "Hello Joe, I guess I am going to be free this evening after all. I'd be pleased to come over to your room later on." " I'm sorry, Bill, I only have a room, but find it more personal than a hotel, and after you refused, I invited someone else." "Oh that's too bad! Well I must say you delivered an effective presentation." " Why thank you! Holding out his hand for a handshake he smiles and says, "good day Bill!" "Good day! And have a pleasant evening," replied Bill as he turned and went out the door. Joe smiled to himself, I wonder if Bill knows it's not really important what ones name is or where they live, it's what you are that's really important." © Copyright 2007 Funnyface (UN: funnyface at Writing.Com).
