Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the costliest hurricane, as well as one of the five deadliest, in the history of the United States.[2] Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall.

Knowing she was coming
Along the Gulf Coast’s span
Triggered mass evacuations
Inland, seeking higher land.
New Orleans was a target
Never more she’d be the same.
All changed that August day.
Some refused to leave.

Deluges of rain did pound
Each inch along her path
Storm surge submerged the town.
They felt Katrinna’s mighty wrath.
Raging winds were blowing.
Unleashed fury struck the streets.
Creating massive damage,
The Hurricane would not retreat.
Insurgent water over levees flowed
Our beautiful Big Easy was
Now a city left to grieve.
