I stared at the evil Lord Puzzle. “You will not have it! Not my prized Excalibur!”

Lord Puzzle put his hands up defensively. “Now, Joe, you know it’s not nice to threaten people with a spoon.”

“Stop insulting my sword!” I yelled. This caught the attention of several of Mr. Puzzle’s lackeys, and they started advancing on me. Their white suits of armor gleamed in the dim light of the chandeliers.

“Stay back,” I growled as I hefted my golden shield. “I am not afraid to defend my life and my kingdom.”

“Someone grab the stupid yellow platter before he hurts himself,” one lackey murmured as they surrounded me.

All at once, they charged. The sheer number of them overpowered me, stripping me of my sword and shield. I howled in anguish as Lord Puzzle stabbed my arm with a thin stiletto that I knew was tipped with poison.

“Sleep tight, Joe. We’ll joust again in the morning.” Lord Puzzle pulled the dagger out as my mind filled with a haze. The soft laughter of his lackeys chased me as the familiar darkness enveloped me.

As I slipped into the dreaded magic-induced sleep, I vowed that I would have the last laugh. They may have won the day, but the war was far from over.
