For Flying Colors Contest
Sea and Sky.

With outstretched hand
Upon the sand,
She beckoned to her sister
"Come see, I believe
Mermaids have been and left
For look right here, it's perfectly clear
They've forgotten their emerald jewels."
Her sister, not a dreamer and certainly not for games
Would dash away the child's hopes
And that is such a shame.

With a toss of her dark hair, arms crossed at her waist
She simply said. "What jewel you fool, it's sea weed that you see,
Not pearls, or stones, or emerald jewels or anything of that kind-
And mermaids- they're just something that you made up in your mind!"

"Fine, don't play, go away, miss out! I don't care...
I'm not to blame for all the pretty things you say aren't there.
Said little sis, blowing big miss a kiss and walked off with her nose in the air.

She walked upon the cold wet sand, golden as angel's hair
Quite enjoying the freedom of not having big sis there
She loved that her feet sunk in,
The way the water dragged her along
She felt as light as a feather, pulled by a wind so strong

When her feet became too icy, she left in search of shells
She kicked up the sand to find them,
Some were in pockets of wells
Such sizes and shapes dazzled her eyes
The one she liked the best was such a pretty thing
It opened like a door, on either side a wing
She lifted it up to the sun and she saw
Pastel colors like a rainbow, she had never seen before
She tucked it safely into her pocket and went further to explore

Up above her head a crimson kite weaved and dived
With several bright ribbons flapping freely behind

Amazement struck her and what confused her all the more
Was that it wasn't a young child's kite
But prim and proper Elanor
Her sister, the one that never cracked a joke
Was laughing with her head back
As though something inside her broke.

"Sorry Kate..." She told her.
"I was mean and I was rude...
You are five years younger, but there's things we can still do."

Kate joined her sister as the kite ducked beneath the sinking sun
It was time to go back home
But they were having so much fun

The sea and sky united,
dark and light still one
Two sisters, very different
Yet still they can have fun.

So dabble in the dreaming
And sift for treasures deep
There's no harm in imagination
When memories like these we keep.
