Do Angels Sleep on Clouds?

ACT 1

Scene 1

A pediatric, semi-private, hospital room. In bed 1 is DONNY. He's nine, and suffering from a blood disorder which he's had since age four. He's awaiting a bone marrow transplant due to the fact other forms of treatment were unsuccessful. In bed 2 is MIKEY. He's also nine and he's there because of a sore on his left leg that won't heal. DONNY has been in the hospital for a week, while MIKEY has been there for three days.

NURSE SHIRLEY: Time to get up, you guys. Breakfast is here, and you have to keep your strength up.

DONNY: What's going on? Who's talking? I was having a great dream.

MIKEY: What's for breakfast?

NURSE SHIRLEY: That is a mystery to me. Lift the covers and the mystery will be solved. Do you like mysteries? Now eat, drink, and be merry cause in an hour you'll be wet.

NURSE SHIRLEY places a note above MIKEY's bed that reads: BED REST. MIKEY looks at it and cries.

NURSE SHIRLEY: Don't you worry none. I've got something special planned for you later. It's a surprise. Now, eat before it gets cold.

DONNY: What did you order, Mikey?

MIKEY: I have Fruit Loops, Juice, a banana, pancakes, and some bacon. What did you get?

DONNY:{making a face} I wanted pancakes too. But I got milk, juice, a soft egg, and some Cream of Wheat. Yuck. Want to trade?

DONNY's parents, EDWARD and HELENE enter the room.

DONNY: Mom, this stuff is terrible. I don't like any of it. Can't I have pancakes and bacon like MIKEY?

HELENE: No you may not. Your body can't handle that right now. After the transplant, we'll go to IHOP and you can have the biggest stack they make. Now, please eat.

MIKEY: I'm sorry, DONNY. When we both get out of here, I'll have my mom make us two of the largest hot fudge sundaes in the world.

HELENE: MIKEY, I saw your parents out in the hall. They're talking to your doctor. They should be in soon.

MIKEY: Great! I'd better eat these pancakes, or my dad will.

Scene II

MIKEY's parents, JORDAN and DORINDA enter the room after speaking with the doctor. They try to keep their emotions in check, but DORINDA is losing the battle.

MIKEY: What's wrong with Mom, Dad? Why is she crying?

JORDAN: She's happy that maybe one of us can help DONNY

MIKEY: Are you sure? You want me to tell you the truth. Are you telling me the truth?

MIKEY: What's wrong, Dad? What did the doctor say?

JORDAN darts a look to his wife, and she takes over.

DORINDA: Honey, the doctor talked to us and told us why your leg won't heal. You have what is called bone cancer. He wants to do surgery to make the cancer go away.

MIKEY: When does he want to do this?

DORINDA: Tomorrow morning. He wants to take your left leg. It's the only way to get rid of the cancer.

MIKEY: I don't want to have the surgery. If they take my leg, I won't be able to walk, play, or have friends. Everyone will make fun of me. They'll call me names. I won't be able to play sports.

JORDAN: Son, you can't get another leg, but we can't get another you. Your life is more precious, more important. You have to have the surgery.

Scene III

DONNY is rushed back into the room, semiconscious. He is placed on the bed and medical personnel work to stabilize him. His parents are told to wait in the hall for the doctor to speak to them.

MIKEY: What's wrong with DONNY?

DORINDA: We'll have to wait and see.

Later that night, DONNY regains consciousness. His parents are at his side and he wants to know what happened. He's groggy and weak.

DONNY: Where am I?

HELENE: You're in the hospital, honey.

DONNY: What happened?

HELENE: You passed out in the playroom. You're back in your room now.

DONNY: Am I going to die?

HELENE:{with tears in her eyes} No, honey. What ever gave you that idea?

DONNY: Did they find a donor yet?

HELENE: Not yet. We're still waiting to see if the registry comes up with a name.

DONNY: Where's MIKEY?

HELENE: He's in his bed talking to his parents.

DONNY: Mom, do angels sleep on clouds?

After asking that question, DONNY closes his eyes and passes away. A few minutes later, a nurse enters with test results. She informs his parents that MIKEY's mother, DORINDA would have been a match.
