Boxing Match

The jab keeps coming,
again and again.
My eyes swollen shut,
my cheeks raw and bleeding

A hard right lands,
and my head snaps back.
My vision gets fuzzy.
I lean on the ropes.

No help here,
I am punched at will.
But I won't go down,
I will not yield.

I flick out a left,
but she bats it away.
Her jab to my eye
causes me to wince.

A sharp right hand,
and I stagger once more.
A left to my kidney,
and a right to my jaw.

I should go down.
But I won't go down.
I will not yield.
I will not yield.

Hit her you bum
a voice cries from within.
But she's my wife,
I can't hit.

Her punches slow down.
Perhaps it's over.
Time to rest,
and recover a bit.

But there is always tomorrow.
I'll say something wrong.
Her jab will flick out;
the fight starts again.
But I will not yield.
