Dream Girl

The warm air seemed to seep into Jonathon’s body, draining his strength. Lethargically, he lay under the tree, Audra’s head resting on his arm.

“Any more food left,” he asked?

Audra stretched out her arm and pulled the picnic basket toward her. She lifted the lid and peered into the dark interior. “Nope.”

She rolled on her side and struggled to sit up.

“Come on, lazy bones,” she said. “The fireworks display isn’t until dark. Let’s go over to the swimming pool and cool off.”

Jonathon opened one eye. “God,” he muttered, “you’re beautiful.” His heart seemed to swell with as he was overwhelmed by his feelings.

“What was that? A yes, I’ll presume,” she laughed.

“No, it wasn’t a yes. Go ahead – I want to finish my nap.”

“Just remember that when all the boys are ogling me. You had your chance.”

“Forever,” she said, walking away.

“Forever,” he responded, his voice trailing off as he returned to sleep.

A clamor from the pool area roused him. He found himself moving before he was fully awake, running in the direction of the noise.

He pushed through the crowd to find … “Audra,” he cried. Her limp body lay alongside the pool’s edge, a lifeguard working to revive her.

Jonathon sat bolt upright trying to find reality among the remnants of his dream. Oh Audra, how I miss you. I would give anything to see you, to hold you once more.

Laying back down, he became aware of the moonlight filtering through the window. Glancing toward it, a flash caught his eye. He focused and saw the glistening outline of a wet footprint on the floor.

“Forever,” he whispered as he returned to a warm summer’s day … and Audra.
