The Deacon – Character Sketch of Miller Jackson
• He is considered a ‘good guy’ by his family and neighbors • He refuses to give handouts to street people on principle • He spent his last vacation painting his house • He wouldn’t refuse to help anyone – but he’s not shoving to get to the head of the line • He donated $30 to one of the Katrina charities • He came from an upper middle class family and resisted their desire for him to become a doctor or a lawyer – he is, what he always wanted to be, a plumber • He is a hard worker • He is good at his job because he enjoys ‘getting his hands dirty’ • He was raised to believe in God • He will sometimes attend church to appease his wife, but thinks ‘if God is everywhere, then he’s spending the same amount of time with him watching NACAR’ • He does do any plumbing repairs for the church at cost • He likes people, but can appear aloof because he’s surprisingly shy • He believes that both partner in a marriage need to give 100% • He has begrudgingly agreed to renew his marriage vows after a church service the Sunday of their 20th anniversary • He has been secretly been stashing money away and is planning a fabulous second honeymoon for his bride • About six years into his marriage, he and his wife had a major blow up and he walked out – he went so far as to get half plastered, pick up another bar patron, and get a hotel room – but after a bit of sloppy kisses, came to his senses and ran like hell • He not only confessed this digression to his wife – but will tell the story as a cautionary tale to younger men griping about their wives • He has only a high school diploma, but (with the exception of NACAR) watches TV programs that will educate him • His best feature would be his smile • He is only about 5’10” – but he’s never been disturbed by it – in fact, he often finds his shorter, lean body an asset in his work of squeezing into cramp quarters • He is lean • His light brown hair is a softer, more weathered shade from the gray (his family all gray early) • Perhaps his only vanity is how thick his hair is • His beard is pale and surprisingly soft • He is fair skinned, but usually mows the lawn shirtless and in shorts, so he has obtained a good base color, so as long as he uses sunscreen, he’s okay outside • He has always had pretty clear skin • He is very strong for his size • His hands are rough and calloused • He has long, tapering fingers, and he keeps his nails and cuticles neatly trimmed • He will read any book he finds and listens to all news radio while he’s working • He drinks sweet iced tea • He is easily fed – if he has to eat fast food, that’s fine; he will also cook something for himself • He likes looking at woman, but learned his lesson years before – he is a one woman man • He does like talking with women, as well as men – in fact, he likes interacting with people in general • He chuckles a lot, but rarely laughs out loud – however, when he does let go, his laugh is infective • He has a pretty good sense of humor • He neither smells of body odor or cologne • He is always well groomed • He has no hips or ass – and because of this, carries a toolbox, rather than risking, even a modest, tool belt dragging his pants down • He wears neat golf shirts with his business logo embroidered on them, and always keeps a complete change of clothes in his van • He rarely wears a coat – even in winter • He is a bathroom minimalist – and takes nothing, not even a newspaper, in with him • He tends to talk very fast if he’s excited about something • He is quick to blowup and equally quick to blow over • He is afraid of spiders, which can be a bit of a problem for a plumber, but he just forces himself to ‘man up’ • He likes most all animals • He uses perfect grammar, and his manners, in general, perfect • He doesn’t mind listening to what’s going on – but never spreads what he hears • He is genuine good person • And, while he hopes he’s good, he would believe he’s as good as others think he is
