Creating New Items

Writing.Com offers a plethora of things to do and gives you some of the most innovative items to create. We offer many useful writing tools and continuously create new features; the possibilities are endless!

Start Writing!

Every Writing.Com member has a portfolio in which his or her "Items" are stored. To create an item on Writing.Com, simply click:
          the "Writing" button (top of page, main navigation bar)
          the "Create an Item" link in the Author Tools pulldown menu
          the ""Click here to create an item" link from within your private portfolio
          any item link at the bottom of your portfolio
          any item link in "Writing Quick Links" (Premium+ feature: Second column*)

Here you will be able to choose the item type you wish to create. There is a brief description with each item to help you choose. To give you a better understanding of our Item types, here is a more detailed description of each.

Non-Interactive Writing

Static Items
These are classic non-interactive, non-changing works containing a single article, poem, essay, interview, short story, monologue, etc. Static Items are the most common Item Type on Writing.Com.

Books
The five (5) types of books include collections, journals, novels, novellas and short stories. For more information on each, please read: Book Item Sub Types. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Documents
Upload DOC and PDF files directly into your portfolio! Both of these file types provide writers with the most flexibility available in formatting their writing. PDFs and DOCs are also the best files for printing work and the formats with which most agents and publishers prefer to work. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.


Web Pages
Create your very own web presence with Writing.Com Web Pages. Post a detailed biography, upload your resume or display your favorite item in your choice of format... the creative possibilities are endless! This is the only item where both WritingML and HTML work seamlessly together. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Product Reviews
While an excellent "exercise" in itself, each Product Review also helps support Writing.Com through our link to buy your reviewed product from Amazon.Com! Writing.Com earns a small commission on any purchases made through these links.

Interactive Writing

Message Forums
Start a forum and interact with the other members of Writing.Com. Ask questions and open discussions, organize fun activities or just sit back and read what to everyone else has to write. Additionally, this is a great format for hosting contests. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Interactive Stories
Interactive Stories are "choose your own ending" stories started by an Author and continued by any Writing.Com member that wishes to participate. At the end of each chapter, readers are given a few plot choices and must choose the direction of the story. When you come to the end of a storyline, it's your turn to add a chapter!

Campfire Creatives
Imagine sitting around a campfire with a group of your friends. The leader of the campfire begins a story that is then passed around the group for their input. With up to 25 participants, you never can tell where these are going to lead!

In & Outs
In & Outs are an interactive means for lists or rolling stories and will only show the last 10, 25, 50, 75 or 100 additions made by members who visited before you. Every time a new addition is made, the last addition on the page will be bumped off. It’s IN with the new and OUT with the old!

Community Note (cNote)
Create an e-card that can be sent from one member to another! cNotes are individual e-cards designed by members with varying themes, images, wording and Gift Point prices. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Groups
Groups may consist of up to 3,000 members depending on the owner's membership type. Members can share restricted access to items, mail the group as a whole, maintain their own Gift Point balance and much more! Any Writing.Com member may join a group. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Madlibs
Madlibs are a relaxing, witty diversion from the norm. Authors create a story or situation with missing words and the reader is asked to fill in the blanks. The surprising results can be hilarious!

Survey Forms
Survey Forms allow up to 50 different customized questions. These are perfect for doing in-depth research for a paper, soliciting a detailed review for your latest Item and much more. See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

User Polls
Question the Writing.Com memberbase as a whole with a poll. Provide voters with a short question and up to 5 voting options. In order to vote, the reader must be a member and logged into their account.

Word Search
Pick a topic and choose up to 25 related words for your readers to find. Use characters from your stories, titles from your folders or just make something up. Please be sure to rate these as you would normally rate your items.

Crossword Puzzle
Have a topic that you would like to turn into a crossword? Create your clues with their corresponding answers and let our system build your crossword for you! Choose the layout that you like best and let the members in the community work at solving your crossword. Crosswords are a great accessory for your newest novel, favorite short story or any other topic you may choose!

Quiz
Create graded and weighted quizzes for others to take! Can you put together an informative or challenging test? It's not as easy as it sounds.


Visual Aids for your Writing

Images
Add an illustration to your latest short story, upload the cover of your newest book, include a chart and graph with your feature article or just tag a creative signature to your message posts. The Image Item allows you to upload an image file from your computer directly into your Writing.Com portfolio! See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.

Photo Album
Upload and store multiple photos within individual items in your portfolio. Larger in size than regular Image Items, photos can be up to 550x550 and uploaded into the album five (5) at a time! Audio Aids for your Writing

Audio
Add sound to your novel or post a reading of your poetry or short stories. The Audio Item allows you to upload an audio file from your computer directly into your Writing.Com portfolio! See: Memberships @ Writing.Com  for more info.
