"My Dad The Hero"
The proudest day in my life.

When I was a lonely child come out to play
I saw a little flower all yellow smiling at me
in the morning of the sun shining brightly,
my birthday today with a chocolate cake
baked by my mom with a loving smile
hugging me a kiss on my cheek.
“Darling dear, so sad to say
Dad still far away at war
but a letter in the mail
with a high five for you - “

“My big boy I see in my mind
here in the desert dry, lonely now
wishing you a happy new birthday boy.
Mom will buy a bicycle for you to ride safely
there in the park, where we used to play hiding
running jumping high in the sky, falling down laughing –
Oh my dear child, how I miss you and Mom writing this letter
tears in my eyes, praying God will keep me safely in his arms
until that precious day, seeing you and Mom at home with me,
praying for brave soldiers still on duty for our freedom from terror.
The children of our land to see no more wars on TV, with fear
of failure living your life without a dad, dying in a war.”

I’m the son, the proudest day of my life
the letter from my Dad with hope,
a poet with words I remember
bold enough to tell the truth
for me to write it for you.
Hallelujah! A memory in my mind,
Mom holding me a frightened child
there on our knees in prayer that day.
Saved from fear to hold my head up high,
honoring the brave soldier my loving hero.
