The Spider
This effort was inspired by a workshop I attended.

The Spider

He sits in the corner alert and aloof
waiting until he has absolute proof,
that the way is clear and he can make a run
around the floor, and have some fun.

He looks once again and decides on his route,
checking that he won't run under someone's boot.
He races across in the blink of an eye
striking the fear into you and I.

I quiver and shake and I can freeze with fear,
the moment that one of these creatures comes near.
The hairs on the back of my neck stand erect;
an irrational fear for such a small insect!

He teases and taunts and disappears from view.
I get the feeling he's playing peek-a-boo.
To shrieks and yells he climbs up the walls,
but I'm always amazed that he never falls.

He scurries and stalks you until you shout,
will somebody please give the damn thing a clout!
The sight of this creature can make grown men cry.
But beware of his web, for I will tell you why.

He spins intricate webs that are silky and soft.
Usually to be found in corners aloft.
Almost invisible to the naked eye,
but right in the path of an unfortunate fly.

I would not call him a beautiful creature,
as I cannot find one redeeming feature.
His legs are so hairy and jointed and long.
His body so small, proportionally, all wrong.

Fear of the spider to some seems unfounded.
But one in the cockpit means a plane could be grounded!
Masses of folk have shed many a true tear,
as arachnophobia is a very real fear.
