I'm Sorry
Rated: 13+ | Poetry | Tragedy | #1704520
A police officer telling a woman that her son died in the line of duty.
I'm Sorry

“Hello,” I asked, “Hello?
Is there anybody home?
I’ve only come to say
I’m sorry.

“A good man
Lowered to his grave,
The bagpipes played
Amazing Grace,
I’m sorry for your loss.

“Ma’am,” I said,
“Your son is dead,
But you should be proud
Of the life he led,
I’m sorry for your loss.

“I know your pain,
I really do,
My father lost
His life too,
I’m sorry for your loss.

“Do not fear,
Victory is near,
We’ve won the war
He held most dear,
I’m sorry for your loss.

“He died to save my life,” I said,
“Instead of me it was him that bled,
He let me go home and
Rest in my bed,
I’m sorry for your loss.

“Hello,” I asked, “Hello?
Is there anybody home?
I’ve only come to say
I’m sorry.”
