The Attack

Her laugh broke the silence. I was sitting there
preparing to invite her out on the town.
My reaction was shock. All I could do was stare.
I turned quickly away, my face in a frown.

It was Saturday night and time to share
the wonder that I am with all the girls.
I prepared myself, from shoes to my hair -
those beautiful locks that frame me in curls.

I glanced in the mirror and saw distortion.
There stood a man with a varicose head!
Compared to his body, it was out of proportion.
"That can not be me," I muttered in dread.

Quickly I turned but found no one was there.
"Perhaps it was just a trick of the light,"
I said and looked back with a silent prayer.
The visage was still enlarged in my sight.

I quickly called my concierge doctor
who answered at once, as he's paid to do.
I told him my symptoms, above the roar
and static as I tried to get my voice through.

The room started to fade, I fell as if dead.
That is the last thing that I can recall.
When I came to I found I was in a bed
like some commoner in a hospital hall.

My doctor approached. "It's only a bump,"
he tried to allay my bubbling fears.
"But my head is misshapen!" I start to slump
as I imagined the taunts and the jeers.

He held up a bedpan. There's my reflection.
Disheveled but handsome, I look back at me.
"You're perfectly fine – there's no sign of infection
or other disease," he said confidently.

"Have I lost my mind? Was it insanity?"
"No – just an attack of your own vanity!"
