Fireworks and Lightening

Raylynna looked out the window, twirling a dark curl around her finger. What a night for a party. It looked as though it were going to storm, the clouds overhead darkening with every passing minute.

"Ray!" The sudden knock on her door, accompanied by the shout of her childhood nickname brought her back to her senses and away from the window.

"Coming." Picking up her purse from the leather chair, she slipped on her heeled sandals and hurried to the door.

"Damn, Ray, hurry up, we're going to be late." Shiana stared at her, "What took you so long, I've been waiting in the car for half an hour."

"Sorry." Raylynna locked the door behind her as she left the small apartment and followed her best friend down the stairs.

"Rudy says this is going to be the best party of the year." Shiana laughed, "But he says that about all of them."

Raylynna rolled her eyes. She wasn't even sure why she had let them talk her into coming. She was tired of these parties, tired of the never-ending harassment from half drunken men, and frankly, she was tired of watching all her girlfriends slut around as if there was nothing else in the world to do but have sex.

Raylynna wanted more. She had her fantasies, she wasn't blind or without feeling, but she wanted more than just sex. She wanted that tingly feeling that sent shivers up her spine. She wanted butterflies and fireworks. She wanted love.

The girls waiting in the car whooped and whistled as they made their way out the door of the building and to the old white car. With a sigh, she pulled the door open and slid into the front seat, shutting the door and rolling the window down as they pulled away from the curb.

"Heard that Rayme will be there tonight." Alicia purred from the back seat.

"Guess you'll be getting lucky then, huh?" Shiana laughed, "It wouldn't matter if he was there or not, you'd get lucky anyhow."

"You're just jealous." Alicia teased, and though Ray knew it was said in fun she shook her head as Shiana grimaced.

"Well, you go ahead and get lucky with Rayme, that leaves the rest of them for us." Stacy giggled.

Ray stared out her window as the others talked and laughed about whom they would take advantage of tonight. If she didn't know any better, she would think a group of horny teenage boys surrounded her. Funny how people didn't look at girls the way they looked at boys.

They arrived at the party before the rain started. Raylynna stumbled from the car as the girls in the back seat pushed at the back of her seat, fighting to be the first in the door of the huge house. The first to catch attention.

She waited until they had all started up the steps of the porch before following them into the house. She looked at her watch. It was going to be a long night.

After fixing herself a drink, and watching the other girls fade into the crowd, Ray found a small unoccupied couch in the corner of one room. Satisfied that she would be left alone, she sat and sipped her drink, looking around the room, fixing her eyes on those men who appeared to be alone.

A tall redhead looked her way, his green eyes skating from the tips of her pink polished toes to the top of her head, pausing briefly on her breasts before he met her eyes and looked away. She knew she wasn't anything special. Her gray sweater clung loosely to her, covering the tighter yellow and purple spring dress she wore. She looked at him again, but his concentration was already fixed on a blond sitting coyly across the room.

"Is this seat taken?"

The voice was deep and rough, and Raylynna almost told him to go elsewhere, but as she turned to look over her shoulder and caught sight of him, no words would leave her mouth.

He was beautiful. His short dark hair spiked up in the front, showing off his beautiful skin unlike most of the boys who wore theirs long and in their faces. His brown eyes danced with amusement and his full lips were puckered in a sweet smile.

"Uh, no." She scooted over to allow him more room.

He was tall. She was sure if she stood up, he would tower over her. He was big. His arms were perfectly muscled, and even through the dress shirt he wore, she watched his body ripple with every move he made.

"Adam." He held out his hand, smiling at her from his seat beside her.

"Ray." She placed her hand in his and her heart skipped a beat. His skin was rough and warm. He had working hands.

"Good to meet you, Ray. Tell me, who are you here with?"

She laughed. "Trust me; you don't want to know the girls I'm here with." She looked at him, the raised eyebrow piquing her curiosity. "Well, maybe you would like them."

"Let me guess. They are the four or five girls who've already had at least one guy in their pants tonight?"

Her face reddened. He was blunt. "Yeah. That would be them."

"And how many have you had tonight?" He stared at her.

Raylynna felt the urge to slap him. How dare he insinuate... but when she looked at him she noticed the slight upcurve of his lips, the twinkle in his eye and she laughed. "None. I'm not..."

"Like them?" He finished her sentence, though it wasn't what she was going to say. "That's good."

They sat watching the party around them, now and then asking a question or pointing out some fool acting ridiculous. Raylynna watched him from the corner of her eye, noticing the way he watched her, both of them trying to hide it from the other.

When his hand slid across the cushion, enveloping hers, her heart sped up and her stomach fluttered. For a brief moment, she considered pulling away, but when his thumb rubbed a gentle circle in the palm of her hand, she was mesmerized.

A loud clap of thunder made her jump and Adam laughed softly. "They say it's going to be a bad one."

"I hope not. I hate storms." Ray stared out the window.

"Ray!" Shiana flew into the room, her hair tumbling around her shoulders where it had earlier been in neat little twin braids. "We gotta go!"

Raylynna looked at Adam, his eyes wandering between the two girls. She knew instantly that whatever had been there between them was gone. As usual, Shiana caught his attention. She tried to pull her hand from his and was surprised when he held it tightly, refusing to let her go so easily.

Shiana however, would not be so easily ignored. "Hello sexy."

Adam smiled at her, his sparkling teeth peeking from between his luscious lips. "Hello."

Raylynna sighed softly as he let go of her hand and stood. She groaned inside as he offered that same hand to Shiana.

"Adam. And you are?"

Shiana grinned and winked at Raylynna before placing her hand in his. "Whoever you want me to be, doll."

A sudden burst of anger flared inside Raylynna and she stormed from the room. She refused to look over her shoulder; refused to watch the man of her dreams succumb to the whore she called her friend.

"Ray! Wait up."

Shiana's voice stopped her as she opened the car door. "Hurry up. Can we go now?"

Raylynna was surprised to see the other girls already in the car. She opened the door and threw herself inside as Shiana made her way around to the driver's side.

"We're going to Rudy's house. You up for it?" Alicia poked Raylynna in the back of the head.

"No. Take me home."

"As you wish." Shiana rolled her eyes, not guarding the gesture as she put the car in drive. "Who was the hottie? Adam, wasn't it?"

Ray's stomach flip-flopped at just the mention of his name. "Just some guy."

Shiana stared at her, "Yeah, right."

They stopped at the stop light, pulling up beside a blue car. Ray stared out her window, her heart speeding up as she realized that Adam sat in the driver's seat. She watched as he rolled his window down and gestured her to do the same.

She looked back at Shiana and grinned when she put the car in park. She rolled the window down and stuck her head out, "What?"

"You didn't say goodbye!" His voice carried on the wind as it picked up and thunder rolled across the sky.

She climbed a bit more out the window, straining to hear him. "What?"

He leaned out the window toward her, both their bodies stretching toward each other. "You didn't say goodbye."

Raylynna stared as he pushed himself out his window just a bit more until his lips hovered in front of hers. Her stomach fluttered and her heart raced. Her body tingled and her eyes watered. And as their lips met the sky opened up, loosing the storm that had been fighting for release.

Still, with the warm summer rain drenching them, and the light having been green for minutes, they kissed. His lips warmed hers and his tongue teased hers. As they pulled away, the sky lit up with numerous flashes of lightening.

Ray smiled, so much for fireworks!
