“No.”
“What do you mean, no?” “I was unaware the word needed a more detailed explanation. In short, I will not put on that ridiculous costume, and most assuredly will not venture out in public in it.” “It’s a bit of fun, you remember what fun is don’t you?” “I do, and it doesn’t involve a cape and tuxedo.” “No more than my magic requires a pointy hat and a broomstick, but that is what they know of our kind. You agreed to go to this party months ago.” “Because you said we could go as ourselves, you said nothing of silly outfits. Take a look outside, it hasn’t stopped raining in two days, the wind is so fierce you will be able to fly on that broomstick, which you will need to do in order to fetch your hat, I will, as likely as not, be right behind it with that damned cape.” “It’s autumn, it is supposed to be cold.” “Not on Ceriana it’s not.” “Ty, your are a vampire, cold doesn’t even affect you, besides, I’ll use my magic to protect us from the elements.” “I thought we weren’t allowed to use our abilities on this world, isn’t that why you said it would be so relaxing?” “Normally that is true, however tonight we can.” “So that is why we came here? So you could dress up and play at being what you are? We have duties on our own world that need our attention.” “I know, which is why I needed a break. “True enough, but still…” “Fine, no cape. Will you try velvet?” “Perhaps.” “Glad you two could make it, the turnout is as abysmal as the weather. Love the costumes, especially the Vampire, so Anne Rice. How did you remain so dry?” “Magic.” “Of course, what else. Still glad you could make it. What are you up to tomorrow?” “Negotiations with various warlords, trying to maintain the peace in the region for another few months. Between my magic and Ty’s fangs, they do tend to listen.” “Like the rest of us, back to work then. I may try and recall that next Sunday when someone asks me such a silly question.” (word count 370)
