My eyes have chased the rain falling from the sky

I've stood in storms, managing to keep my feet dry,
dancing around the puddles that have been unkind.
My eyes have chased the rain falling from the sky,
all the while pretending that my heart doesn't mind.

I had your love once, but I don't remember when.
I would've held on tighter, had I known it would end.
I should've memorized the sweet things you said,
then it wouldn't be so hard to recall them in my head.

When it hurts, I cushion the pain with false smiles
to catch what might have been from fading away,
but the absence in your eyes travels many miles,
and I cannot bring back photographs of yesterday.
