Medusa

Smothered by indifference.
Not given what she needs.
Caught between an acrid world.
Not given air to breathe.

Try not to blame for who she is.
She did not ask for this.
Merely born and stayed alive.
Not nurtured with a kiss.

Some tried to give her water.
Submerged beneath a flood.
We tried to warn them, stay away.
For this one wanted blood.

Eyes may linger in her beauty.
Her colors for display.
But if you wander close to her,
You'll never get away.

Few are left who know the truth.
We stumble as asleep.
We long to feel our feet or hands.
None escaped for free.

The grounds littered with promises.
The bowels no longer warm.
We came as if one at a time.
Then became a swarm.

So quickly turn and look away.
Remember whence you came.
For if she turns your heart to stone,
You've no one else to blame.
