                              GOOD NEWS

It was a long walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Cleopas and his wife Anna were already tired, but they just wanted to get home.  The weight of grief was heavy on both of them.  Not only had they lost the best friend they ever had, to a terrible death, but their hopes for the future had died with him.

A stranger walking the same way joined them.  He seemed to want to have a conversation with them as they walked.  He asked, “I can tell you are sad.  What has happened?”

Cleopas said “You’re not from around here, are you?  Otherwise you would know what just happened, because it’s all anyone is talking about.  The Romans killed our best friend last Friday.  Our hearts are broken, for we will miss him terribly, and on top of that we were beginning to believe he was the Messiah.”

The stranger said, “But didn’t you hear what he said?  He said he was going to die, that was his mission here.  You know the Prophets foretold it all, you read the books.  And do you remember he promised he would be raised from the dead?”

Yes they did remember.  When they reached home they invited him to spend the night for it was late.  When he sat down to eat with them, they recognized Him.  The Friend they thought they had lost, alive again!  The fatigue of the past three days fell away along with their sorrow.  As soon as they knew Him he vanished.  Now with great joy they hurried back to Jerusalem to the gathering of disciples to bring the wonderful news.

They burst in on the sad gathering and announced “It’s all true!  We saw Him! He explained everything!  It’s true, He’s alive!”
