christmas eve

                   was the day before
                   and christmas came
                   virgin white on sheets
                   of grey
                   I longed for you
                   in quiet times
                   moments every shadow moved
                   (and I found peace
                   alone)
                   thought you were there
                   a stirring on the breeze
                   snowflakes whisked
                   across a frozen pond
                   november had been written
                   a kinder page
                   what mystery we held
                   now reappeared

                   I hear the singing
                   somewhere else
                   beyond this silent night
                   choirs gathered 'round
                   do they remember
                   (as I do)
                   it fills my heart
                   with gratitude
                   to know
                   that you are here
                   while somewhere in between
                   you'll find me home
                   and listening
