Life is like a ferris wheel
It keeps on turning without feel
As it spins round and round
It picks you up and lets you down

by Chi Coltrane

Olivia Simone White, 5 days old.
San Diego's first baby of 2011.

New Year's Baby

This Christmas passed without a tear;
our grief exchanged for hope this year.
Expected soon, a birth to come;
each day we think, this day's the one!

We're waiting for the phone to ring,
our minds and hearts on just one thing;
the call may come tonight, today,
"Olivia is on her way!"

A grandchild, first of lots we pray,
awaiting still the blessed day
to make her entrance to the world,
our long awaited dream unfurled.

We're back to work, took leave of fun,
the parties over, visits done;
gone the way of Christmas wrapping,
ribbons, feasts and Christmas napping.

The new year's eve is coming soon,
just one more rising of the moon.
We're told the birthing has begun
perhaps, before tomorrow's sun......

or, maybe not, the hours drag......
I'm waiting for my chance to brag,
congratulate her mom and dad,
receiving such a gift so glad.

At Times Square, the ball's descended,
our midnight watch still not ended.
At twelve twenty-two, a baby's cry,
nearly seven pounds, not yet dry!

For nine months waiting 'till this night,
our hearts now bursting with delight.
Both mom and baby doing well,
now for sleep, until the bell.

The morning brings time to reflect
on gifts from God, my thoughts collect
of loved ones passed and loved ones come;
the cycle same for everyone.

We're grandparents! A baby blessed
with love, and hope and happiness.
On this, our day of joyful bliss,
we wait for baby's cheek to kiss.
