God can speak to new Christians and older Christians differently with the same passage depending upon their need and spiritual growth. Romans chapter 6 is no different. The meaning of a passage of scripture should not change even with spiritual growth. The application, however, does change with spiritual growth.
A new believer would read this chapter and be convicted to change their behavior because of the love of Jesus. Because God loved us enough to send his son to die on the cross to save us from the slavery of sin, we should not continue to live in sin. By continuing to live in sin, we show that we are ashamed of the gospel. The application of this chapter for me lies in the service of my “members”. My hands should be more giving, my heart more loving, and in everything I say with my speech should be in honor of God. Because I am no longer a slave to sin but a servant of righteousness, I should act like a servant of God.
