He is an intensely private man and can be inaccessible at times to others Albert Samuel Redding III lived the american dream. A wife, two sons, a good job and a home in the suburbs as well as a second in the mountains for summer retreats. He worked long hours to maintain it all and enjoyed a great deal of upward mobility and respect. Then came the plague. The world as it was known changed then, and everyone and everything evaporated in its wake. The world was a different place and nobody was safe. Redding fled with his family to the isolation of his mountain home with the intention of escaping the calamity. His wife, however, was injured in the escape and he and his two boys are saddled with her care in addition to their own vigilance and ultimate survival. Barricaded in their cabin, Albert ventures out only to hunt and scavenge. The boys are left to mind the cabin, prohibited from venturing out. Albert insists that they complete their "lessons". That is, reading and memorizing a battered copy of the bible. Four years it has been the same, but they are still alive and breathing. Though tensions are rising amongst the family, Albert insists that they stick with what works. Many times he is lost in thought, uncommunicative and withdrawn, but it is his way that has kept them alive and he intends that nothing change. "Better alive than dead", his motto.
