This year is going to be MY year!

Dear Me,

PLEASE NOTE: This is your last chance to do right by yourself.
Read below to learn more about your goals and how you expect to achieve them.

This is your Life Purpose Department, located in the small corner of my brain just past the 90% that is useless to you, writing to let you know that you have a lot to accomplish this year, and you’re going to do it with hard work and determination. This is your last chance for some things, so you have a lot riding on your success this year.

As per the usual for these letters that you send yourself every year, we are going to start off with a bit of encouragement. The last year has seen a lot of changes, as well as a lot of ups and down. You got married and even bought your own house. You also started attending Johnson State College for a fresh new start. All of these are great changes in your life and there will be more great changes to come in the New Year. You can handle all that the New Year has to bring with grace, whether it brings good or bad.

So just what do I have to work on this year?

The wedding was absolutely amazing! Now comes the hard part of making sure that marriage gets off on the right foot so that it stays strong for many, many years. Make sure that you tell your husband you love him in new and unique ways every day, and keep the romance fresh with fun things both in and out of the bedroom. Keep your new marriage strong!

As for school, you know this is the last chance you have to do well. If you do well this semester, you can continue to go to school to get your bachelor’s degree in Psychology. However, if you don’t do well, you are done with school and will start paying back all of your student loans. Don’t let the money and time you’ve spent to get this far on your degree be a waste! It will be hard to set aside time for schoolwork with your full-time work schedule, but you can make this work even if you have to work on homework during your lunch breaks. You only have two classes this semester and you can do really, really well if you just apply yourself throughout the entire semester!

Your new job might not be the best job but it’s low stress and you like what you do, so keep things going on the right track with this new job by working hard and staying out of the drama. Enjoy your job a little more by making your desk your own with pictures and other little tidbits. Your goal here is to succeed the entire year at this job. It’s been hard for you to keep a job more than 6 months, so making it a year will be a great accomplishment!

And last but not least, my writing – what should we work on this year? Prose? Poetry? Publication? Well, why not all three?! You’ve had that idea for a novel floating around in your brain for quite awhile now (I know because I keep bumping into it!) so get it down on paper by the end of the year, even if it’s just an outline. As for your poetry, make a conscious effort to write at least two poems a month and one of them should be for a Writing.Com contest. You can’t win contests if you don’t enter them! Publication might be a little hard, but just as with the contests, you can’t get published if you don’t put yourself out there, so pick a few poems and a short story or two and start looking for publication venues to submit them to. If you try hard, it will happen!

So as soon as you’re done writing this letter, it’s time to start working on that to-do list, both adding to it and completing it, so that you can begin accomplishing the goals you’ve set out to tackle in 2011. I know you can do it this year and that you will not only enjoy yourself doing it but you’ll also feel a great sense of accomplishment at your achievements.

Sincerely (and until next year),

The Tiny Little Part of Your Brain That Motivates You
