2011 Quills Nominations and Winners
All the nominees and winners for the 2011 Quill Awards (5th edition) are listed here |
Note that this is for 2011. For the 2010 Quills nominees, see
To nominate someone, please visit the Quills forum, "The Quill Awards" Statements included may be edited from the original nomination statements and may be removed or reasonably edited at any time. Names of nominators are not included for privacy reasons. Awards will be given in the following categories (F=Finalists were selected from these entries): Non-Static Awards: created and/or reasonably active in 2011 Best Forum (Non-Contest) "Paper Doll Gang Blog City" It only opened this year and is going strong. It's a fantastic group to belong to. "Coffee Lounge" This forum is sponsored by the group, I.N.K.E.D. It's a place for WDC newbies and oldbies alike to gather, meet, post questions/comments and/or simply "hang out" over a cup of coffee. It was created in early 2011 and has become quite a popular hot spot! "Writing Hurts: Review Forum" 1) His amazing grasp of the English language. He knows his history, and is an expert on English and American Literature. 2) His prelude is open and refreshingly honest - he agrees he is not the finest editor and he warns all to be prepared for his reflections of their work. 3) His fan following is unique, notably because writers KNOW he will not give them "fluff", fake positives, or unrealistic statements about their talent. "Writers Garden Holiday Jail - A - Thon" "Snowball Fight for R.A.O.K.! ~ Ended." I think it speaks for itself, but I don't think I've ever had this much fun throwing snowballs at other people. And I LOVE throwing snowballs at other people. I thought this was great fun and for a good cause; a really original idea and a great multi-person activity that makes interesting use of one of Writing.Com's best unique item types. "In Fond Remembrance of Our Friend, Lyle" This forum was created in late December, 2011. It's very active till today because of Sticktalker "Discreet Dracula - Activity Complete" "Misfortune Cookies" From WDC's master of comedy comes a refreshing take on one of life's most intriguing mysteries: fortune cookies! This In & Out allows you to flex your comedic creativity like no other. NOT AWARDED (insufficient nominations) "Invalid Item" This quiz offers a fun and challenging activity with wonderful prizes, including detailed reviews for site members. The idea is unique and the prizes are very generous to lucky winners. NOT AWARDED (insufficient nominations) Best Image "One more Siggie" "Invalid Item" "Poetry in Motion" "Both Ways" "Invalid Item" "Morning song Image" "Dark Society Signature" "Rainbow Writers Reviewing Signature" Best Image Shop "Leger's Shop" Leger is known for excellence in all her images, and I, for one, have always been a satisfied customer. "Beyond the Pond Images" "Carol's Classic C-Note Shoppe" "Kiya's Sig & Banner Shop" "THANK YOU C-NOTES" "Invalid Item" Best New Contest (F) "A Poem A Day Contest " The contest was created in June and has been going strong ever since! The daily prompts are incredibly creative and a wonderful way for poets to get inspired and/or try some new styles, forms and techniques. "The Great Writing.Com Birthday Caper!" This fun, and very original, activity was created for WDC's 11th Birthday celebration. The "Police Report" featured clues and the police statements of all the "suspects". Those that participated had to use those resources to figure out whodunnit in one of the greatest mysteries to ever strike WDC. The winners received some excellent prizes! "The Character Sketch Challenge" This has to be my favourite contest on WdC so far. You get to improve your writing, really get to know your characters, and get to know other authors. It was great fun, and I would haunt the site each day, waiting for the new prompt to be posted. "Picture Perfect Poetry Contest" This contest has proven to be a fresh, new poetry contest with a different theme each month, and I know that all the contestants enjoy it. "Letter from Home" This is a contest to write letters to military personnel serving overseas. I can think of nothing more worthwhile than taking the time to write and say thanks to those who fight to protect us. Each and every letter submitted is sent to a soldier. The letters written and the responses received have been amazing! "Dragon's Keep--Temporarily Closed." Why nominate this contest? Well, the prompts are creative, the judges are legion (and each gives an extremely thorough/professional review), and the prizes, appropriately enough, are dragon sized. "The New Millennium Weekly Quote Contest" The forum itself looks elegant with a eye catching banner, the idea is new and unique and I guess that is why so many members take part each turn. It is one of a kind. I think the gifts are generous and it encourages winners so much. It must have taken alot of effort to make and run, but I believe it will last strongly for a long while. "Invalid Item" "ONE SIZE FITS ALL RAFFLE" This raffle is unique and offers more prizes and incentives than any other raffle I've seen. "Horror, Inc Presents: The Daily Slice" The Daily Slice is an awesome new daily prompt horror themed contest that offers not only great prizes for the winner but an excellent review for every entrant. It really is the best contest available to horror fans or anyone looking to break into the genre. "Horror, Inc. Presents: Bad Moon Rising" Bad Moon Rising is an excellent horror themed monthly contest based on the lunar cycle for those writers that need more than a day to become inspired. This contest offers substantial prizes for the winner as well as insightful reviews from the judges for every entrant. Best Contest (F) "Separate Worlds Monthly Contest" Spectacular Speculations has given fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative fiction writers a voice. This contest is both a credit to WDC and its creator, who features the work of WDC members in his bi-monthly ezine. "Twisted Tales Contest" Twisted Tales is a contest for people who have a twisted mind and who love to write tales with a plot twist ending. This contest makes authors write more and more and bring their characters and settings to life! "Rising Stars Shining Brighter" "The Writer's Cramp" "15 for 15 Contest --- Closed" "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" "Hawk's Vocabulary Extravaganza" "A MidSummer Night's Scream" "NaNoWriMo Write-A-Thon" "The Character Sketch Challenge" Best New Group "TGDI Group" Established in 2011, this group has flowered in a very short time, offering features not seen anywhere else - for example, the TDGI Library, which requires those who would like to have a story included to first have 10 participation points for group reviews and activities. What it boils do to is that as a new group on WDC they are innovative and attracting fantasy writers. "Invalid Item" Beka has truly created something to be proud of, something worth mentioning, a cause worth championing. Regardless of one's persuasion or opinion, there is no more nobler a pursuit than to provide a haven for any whose pursuits might otherwise dwindle or dim without others to support and nurture their individual gifts within the community. "I.N.K.E.D." The group was established in early 2011 to "Inspire Newcomers through Kind and Encouraging Deeds". Members spread positivity throughout the site and give a warm welcome to newbies as they sign up. The group is not even a year old yet, but it has already been listed as one of WDC's Angel Groups. "Invalid Item" This group spotlights the other amazing poetry contests throughout WDC. It not only features those contests, but also spotlights the winning poems of those contests. The group also teaches members about different poetry forms and has a review-buddy system, where "buddies" can earn some great prizes! "The Newbie Welcome Wagon" "Newbie Help And Support Group" A great group for newer members in need of guidance in the WdC Community, and a great place for older members who like to help them out. The leader, Missy, always makes herself available for reviewing and support for all members. "Invalid Item" A group designed to promote the ones who have given reviews from "Tome of Artistry I". From time to time, fun and challenging activities are included to help promote community spirit. "Horror, Inc." They are a wonderful new group geared to the horror enthusiast. They have a public review page where horror fans can submit items for in-depth reviews by some of the best horror writers on WDC. They also host excellent daily, weekly, monthly and even holiday contests all in the horror genre. Best Group "The Coffee Shop for the Fantasy Society" The CSFS has great review raids and activities -- and has been growing over the past couple of years - in membership and the level of activities. As one of their participants, I value this group highly! "Showering Acts of Joy Group " Of all the reviewing that goes on here on WDC, I believe Showering Acts of Joy delivers the most quality reviews and is very organized while doing so. They do it by encouragement, helpful suggestions, feedback from showerees, and rewarding quality efforts made by their members. Every participating member is treated like family by the leaders of this fine group. I'm very proud to be a small part of SAJ. "RISING STARS ! " As we all know, the Rising Stars is one of the quintessential groups at Writing.Com, under the excellent leadership of Gabriella, whose guidance has helped it to flourish and become what it is today! "Knights of the Review Table (on hiatus)" This reviewing group supports fellow authors by providing helpful, courteous and honest reviews. The group is consistently in the top 10 of the "most actively reviewing groups". The well-constructed reviews from the members can be found throughout the public review page! "The WDC Angel Army" "WDC Power Reviewers Group" Truly, if you want a group that not only offers the best reviews but outstanding writing contests, auctions and raffles, you never have to look further than the Power Reviewers. This group is almost as old as WDC itself and has been the #1 rated group on WdC for most of 2011. There is a reason for this. "The Paper Doll Gang Home Page" This project was designed to help Newbies to first learn WDC navigation and basic reviewing skills, then those moving on to the Advanced class, to succeed in their writing aspirations, while continuing to develop their reviewing skills. We offer a nurturing environment, where new members can grow with their peers. All members are matched with a Pal and a Mentor. All of the leaders are friendly, encouraging and helpful. "Circle of Sisters" "I.N.K.E.D." Best Blog "Life is random...and so am I" The blog was not created in 2011, but it's been very active in 2011. It even won 1st Place in Round 1 of "30-Day Blogging Challenge" in July. This blog covers anything and everything and has quite a faithful following of readers/commenters. "Who Do I Think I Am??" This entertaining blog has a little bit of everything for everyone. It also won 1st Place in Round 2 of the "30-Day Blogging Challenge". "Destruction of a Fractured Mind" A brutally honest look into his life, Lone shares what's on his mind and what he looks to make better without sugarcoating the outcome. He invites readers into the inner workings of his mind, and deserves a nomination for not holding back. "Across the Table, a Devil on my Shoulder" An intriguing view into the experiences of an English teacher in Japan, and the unique personalities of his former students. A must-read. "Hey, life? Are you kidding me?" This blog pokes fun at everyday life. It is always upbeat and amusing. It can, at times, be thought-provoking as well. Audra talks about everything from news to her views on life. It's always enjoyable. "SoCalScribe's Diatribe" Static Awards: must be static items created by a single author in 2011 unless otherwise noted Best Short Poem-Structured "Invalid Item" This poem is excellent on so many levels, from form to symbolic language, and manages to capture a universal moment in time which is the hallmark of all quality poetry. The form -- the Rondeau -- is a traditional French form with hundreds of excellent examples. With its strict rhyme/refrain parameters, it is not an easy form to write to. "Echoes of E" This poem brilliantly crackles magic. Read it, then read it again. Then meditate upon it. After all that you may appreciate a mere fraction of its sublimeness. "Bolshy Droogs" "Lilac Time" "Remembrance" Best Medium Poem-Structured "September Morning as the Phoenix Calls" How disarming a title. How lazy and calm the reader sails along. Yet this fine poet has the sensibility to design piece, work earnestly, so structure, line emphasis, imagery seems "normal" - a Sunday in the Park. This is a mark of a talented writer. draw the reader into the unknown, insecure space, and allow actions, so normal, we, as readers are lulled by this "day in the life". An excellent, non-traditional "seeing" unlike most other writers. "Moonlight Pursuit" "Time Won’t Heal This" Have your Kleenex ready, because the first stanza of this poem is so poignant you'll have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by it. And the rest? It's a wonderful tribute presented as a beautiful, brilliant poem. We should all be lucky enough to be remembered in this way. "A Call to Earth Elements" No matter what poem she writes, it flows so smooth. You can always visualize the picture she paints with her words. "Wasteland" Our wastelands between the silences of the mind. "The Hourglass" A touching memorial for a dear friend to many of us here. "Why Am I?" "Tomorrow" Best Long Poem-Structured "Invalid Item" "Invalid Item" "Invalid Item" This poem is an exercise in excellence in more ways than one. Not only is it rife with conventions that sing a sonorous song, but the descriptive language is superb. The theme is original and unique; the tone is that of a dark, macabre masterpiece! This poem is a credit to Patrick and it is more than deserving of a nomination. "Awardicon Envy" Who doesn't get a little awardicon envy now and then? This humorous take on the highly coveted awardicon is quite hilarious! "The Ballad of Billy Bone" This terrifying and superbly-crafted tale is an absolute gem! "Curse of the Setting Moon " The poem not only makes brilliant use of vocabulary and rhyme, but tells a story within a story and packs an eye-popper of an ending. All in only 11 quatrains. Best Short Poem-Freeverse "Oiled Canvas" "The Forbidden Masterpiece" A short, breathtaking, and sweet poem by a master poet. "A New Perspective" It's incredible how Jess can make you stop and think for so long with so few lines, an incredible little piece. "Wardrobe of Words" Best Medium Poem-Freeverse (F) "Rest With Me" This poet is consistent, designing images not the norm, rhythmic, fluid, with language that allows each reader to ponder and meditate on the structure of images, emotion, sounds, and topsy-turby adjectives not normally used in common language. A fine, piece of work which was never thrown lazily into the universe; but carefully, diligently studied and meditated as to the best of what is the best. "Absence of Time" This poem is an outstanding exploration of the power of nature. The reader is taken far away from the world and allowed to experience the rising and falling of the ocean waves through the cadence of the words. A must read. "Drums" An intense poem--one where you can actually hear your heart beating faster as you read along. "The Wounds of a Dogwood" A dogwood tree is injured and as you read along you can feel the pain as it tries to heal. "MY STUFF" "The Art of Silent Crying" "First Snow Fall" A beautiful winter poem and a Rising Star Shining Brighter Legacy Winner. 'Nuff said. "Interlude" "A day at the office" "Epiphany" "Invalid Item" Best Long Poem-Freeverse "All Of Hers" This was such a mesmerizing and picturesque poem to read. It transcended me into Mother Nature. I became one with her as I read through the lines. "Bookmarks" This poet always blows me away with her total grasp of the intent, the day, the atmosphere, the subject (no matter how seemingly mundane), and her ability to make us "be" in that place, that building, that book, that smell, the convergence of all. A book, a feel, a smell, a childhood memory, a piece of one's soul, marking with stains, blasted bindings, folded page edges, even (gasp!) magic marker lining sentence after sentence. "stained to stone" "Tuesday" ""Invocation To The Mews"" As often rebellion breaks out in a great nation, the first ship from the coast of Troy returning to Italy. "Quest" "2011 Poetic Exploration Form Poetry Book" I want to nominate this collection because this is a great source of poems, formatted, with each having explanations for each form. Each poem is of the highest grade, and each deserves its own award. NOT AWARDED (insufficient nominations) Best Short Non-Fiction "Dear Me (Jan 2011)" This is an incredibly original set of New Year's Resolutions, well thought out, nice to look at, and hilarious to boot. "The Resolution" Items which are such an honest expression of the author's self that they compel one to continue reading are rare, and this is as compelling a statement as you are likely to find, clear yet creative in its language, simple yet fresh in its message. "Accepting My Gay Son" This is a beautiful story of a mother's discovery and acceptance of her gay son; a true story of a mother's love. "A Letter to an American Soldier" This inspirational, patriotic letter to a soldier was written for the "Letters from Home" contest. There is a bit of synchronicity around the timing of when the letter was written. It also received a heartwarming response from a soldier serving in Afghanistan. ""CHICKEN COYOTE," ANYONE?" A funny piece that looks at some of the 'interesting' reviews we all have received from time to time. The comical reactions are priceless! "Pastimes Present:Baseball & Summers Past" "Early Memories: A Patchwork Quilt" A striking, beautifully simple collection of memories from early childhood. "Invalid Item" A short story that captures an embarrassing a moment in time, both self-deprecating and humorous. Something most everyone can relate to. Definitely a writer to watch out for in the future. Best Flash Fiction (F) "Invalid Item" Flash fiction about an adventurer... with a surprise ending! "Invalid Item" A moving portrait of coming to terms with death. "An Egyptian Reportage" An amusing take on Egypt around the time of the revolution. "A Mother and Her Little Boy" An astonishing short tale from World War II, an incredibly powerful scene, and a message to us from our history. "Wilgar's Dilemma" It was this story that made me a fan of hers. She took an image from a contest that for most writers would invoke an epic story with adventure and death, and completely turned the story on its head. "Invalid Item" "A Date with Daphne" "Invalid Item" "Invalid Item" Best Short Story (F) "The Creature (2nd. Twisted Tales)" It is well written, compelling, and intriguing. It talks about monsters, spirituality, the supernatural, mysteries, and unknown knowledge; the path begins at crossroads.... "Underneath an Awning" A powerful story of love and taking chances. A must read for romance lovers. "Invalid Item" The pace of this story grabs you from the beginning and does not let you go until the horrific ending. "Velandra" An intense fantasy story of a girl who is on an adventure. The drama of what she goes through will have you cheering for her. "Invalid Item" A wonderful story written with the purpose of entertaining the reader. You bond with the two characters and they'll have you laughing before you know it--they are quite the pair! "Sleep" "46th and Stockholm " "Seeking Salvation" "A Turquoise Tryst" "Just a Little Closer, Please" "Friendship isn't Easy" "Invalid Item" "Leslie Nielsen Is Dead" "Invalid Item" "Reunion" Best Short Story Collection "Invalid Item" This character sketch of Vincent Hughes is in-depth, getting into the heart of the character Beka has created. Vincent (also known as "Sapphire") is a person with great heart, who struggles with following his dreams, but never seems to lose his optimism. Definitely worth a nomination. "NYC - MUC" This collection was created for Vince Romano and Laura Zimmerman -- two different but compelling characters. Olivia~HappyHolidays/new year! does a great job giving readers a view into the lives of these two characters, their personals struggles and losses, and their battle to overcome what others may not understand. Excellent collection. "Sick/Scary/Twisted Stories" Lilithmoon's Scary Stories are three things: unique, terrifying, and uniquely terrifying. Her descriptions make you want to gag or hide under a blanket; but force you to read further. Her writing is smooth, natural, and always engrossing. Each story in this collection is its own, different in some way, but they all have one thing in common: they are all excellent. "Invalid Item" Best Long Story "Beest" Written in casual first person, the narrator leads readers through painful self awareness with humor. From the first instance where she see herself as a bra size, through an awkward arranged date ending with an evaluation of her own behavior, teenage anxieties gain weight and importance. The light and graceful writing style whisks you through two or three days of high school life so quickly readers can easily miss this stories interwoven themes. "X Sketch " The story of X -- an Enforcer who faces some of the most dangerous monsters out there. Sometimes, however, the biggest demons are the ones inside. Great fantasy/supernatural long story and great characters. "My Best Friend's Brother" "Crossroads of Sin" Best Novel or Novella "Wicked Angels" The story of two people who didn't like each other but ended up needing each other. Fantastic fantasy/supernatural story, and excellent story telling. "Highmage's Plight - Dhr2believe.net" Highmage's Plight was serialized weekly on Writing.com. The novel was completed in July 2011. It's a story unlike any fantasy tale before -- and has elements that one of the first reviewers thought made it "Tolkien meets Star Wars." The Plight is an experiment. It offers readers the opportunity to help the story evolve as books do not. Once they're printed, they are what they are. But Writing.com's resources offer Highmage's Plight the opportunity to grow and change based on reader input... making Writing.com central to the book's very existence. "Alyndoria: The Eternal Seed" "Chasing the Tail Lights" Overall Awards: these either fall into both divisions or neither; must have been created or reasonably active in 2011 Best Action/Adventure "Snowball Fight for R.A.O.K.! ~ Ended." "Pastimes Present:Baseball & Summers Past" "Wilgar's Dilemma" "Invalid Item" Best Comedy "Misfortune Cookies" "Who Do I Think I Am??" "Dear Me (Jan 2011)" "Hey, life? Are you kidding me?"
