The Last Word

"This isn't going to work," Karen observed.

"No, it's the road to the beach," Rob stated.

With a sigh, Karen tried again. "You're not understanding me. You – me, we're not working as a couple."

"Correct. We're taking the day off and ..."

"Stop it!" Karen exploded.

"O.K." he replied. Karen could feel the car begin to slow.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"You said to stop."

Karen could feel herself on the verge of screaming in frustration. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, counting to herself. One, two, three, ...

"Four, five, six," Rob picked up the count.

"How did you ...?" she began.

"I saw your lips moving," Rob said. He turned slightly and smiled. His blonde hair hung rakishly over his forehead, cut just slightly above his piercing blue eyes. His chiseled good looks made her catch her breath.

He's beautiful, she thought, her memories of their time together clouding out the feelings of the moment. No! I'm not going there. I'm not going to talk myself out of leaving!

The car came to a stop in a turn-out that overlooked the ocean. Karen opened her door, got out, and walked to the over-look area. She could feel tears sliding over her cheeks. She felt his strong arms go around her. I do love his feel, his consideration, his ... Stop it! she scolded herself.

She turned to look at him, the sun playing over his face. "Rob," she began, "I can't have you in my life anymore."

Rob smiled his perfect smile. "O.K." was all he said.

Karen pushed the recall button embedded in his neck. "Dream Makers Robotics" would retrieve him.

"Good-bye, Karen."

She smiled as she said her last words. "No, not a good buy at all."
