Refuge

There is a refuge
in the forest
where my mind takes me
on occason.

Hawks circle above
(they always do),
a pair of blue jays
hop from branch to branch.
They are talking to each other
(I don't know what they're saying).
It sounds comforting.

Chipmunks scurry then stop
zig-zagging ever closer.
I throw them almonds.
Filling their cheeks
near to bursting
they look around
and scamper home.

Then, I see her --
timid eyes
from the forest
beckon; yet hold back
Wanting to love,
afraid to trust,
ready to spring
at the first sign
of danger.

I gaze into eyes of brown.
Without the aid of language
we communicate.
Years pass
in forest enchantment.
Our meeting
has made all the difference.
We have both shared
the magic
of love.
