Dark Collisions - Children of the Quake was first written in novel format and then I adapted the prologue and first chapter to a graphic novel script. The story was written, with a graphic novel in mind and is the first one I've attempted to write (being that I can't draw!) Anyone interested in drawing this for me, please email me and we'll discuss it. If not, just enjoy the full novel at:
DARK COLLISIONS - CHILDREN OF THE QUAKE PAGE 1 – Whole page. No strict panels (If any) We are looking mainly at the actual San Andreas Fault line (as usually seen – A big crack in the ground. This image fills the page. Also in overlay are images of the scientists using drilling machines and analyzing data. They have orange hardhats on. Caption: PROLOGUE: A group of scientists are attempting to prevent the biggest earthquake in history from happening. With new technology designed specifically for the San Andreas Fault lines they try to ease the building pressure. The government has closed down the project but the scientists refuse to stop convinced that the obliteration of San Francisco and a repeat of 1906 earthquake is inevitable. PAGE 2, PANEL 1 From street level we see an everyday scene of a busy street in San Francisco. The street is Masonic Avenue and everything appears to be normal. Caption: The Place – Masonic Avenue, SF PAGE 2, PANEL 2 The earthquake hits. The ground is trembling. PAGE 2, PANEL 3 We seem people bracing themselves for the tremors. PAGE 2, PANEL 4 We see a TV screen in a shop windows with a female newsreader. Behind her the headline reads `Buildings Sink in Lower South of Market’. Note this could possible be abbreviated to Lower SoMa as if often known. An image of the buildings sinking from ground level can be seen on the TV screen. PAGE 2, PANEL 6 Cracks appear in the middle of the road. PAGE 2, PANEL 7 We see a full-length shot of Lei. She’s short (5.3 ish) Chinese-American and wears a long black leather jacket, black top, blue jeans and black boots with a small barely-visible heel. No panel border. Caption: This is it. The end of San Francisco. Lei waits for her destiny filled with dread. PAGE 3, PANEL 1 A close-up of Lei’s face. Her eyes are closed. PAGE 3, PANEL 2 We pull back a little. Lei’s eyes are open and we can see that the street is normal again. PAGE 3, PANEL 3 Lei can be seen from the waist up with the shop window behind her. The news caption reads. `Stock market surge’ and figures and graphs are used for the picture. Lei’s expression is one of confusion. PAGE 3, PANEL 4 Lei turns her head away from the shop window. She’s staring at something as if it’s drawing her away. Caption: Without warning she feels a strange pull... PAGE 3, PANEL 5 We see Lei in full length again but this time the world is blurred around her. Caption: ...And the sense of another world around her. PAGE 3, PANEL 6 We see Lei who appears to be in a trance. There’s another world in appearance that appears to be dazzlingly white. PAGE 4, PANEL 1 No panel border. Lei is surrounded by entities in a large panel. The entities are almost completely transparent as if they are ghosts and they appear like people with nothing defined about them. They see like they know something she doesn’t. Caption: It passes over her; through her. PAGE 4, PANEL 2 Panel still borderless and is bigger than the last now as if there are no longer any rules. They entities seem to be too close. Caption: The strange, colourless entities are light and dark, empty but vibrant. PAGE 4, PANEL 3 One entity is shown stretching out towards Lei but it has no real form. Caption: They have no hands yet one stretches out towards her. PAGE 4, PANEL 4 We se a close up of Lei’s hand almost touching the entities hand. She is reaching out as far as she can to bond with them. PAGE 4, PANEL 5 There’s a blinding light as the entity and Lei seem to fuse together. Caption: Never alone again. PAGE 5, PANEL 1 The street is visible again and Lei is only a few steps ahead of the TV store now. Everything is back to normal and the entities aren’t visible anymore. PAGE 5, PANEL 2 We now change perspective to see a young man (John) just a little further away from Lei. He’s neatly dressed and carrying a satchel. We can see him looking at Lei. Caption: Lei cannot see the other world; it has returned to its rightful place but she’s still attached to it by the entity that bound her. She feels it as she knows it feels her. Nobody has any idea except... PAGE 5, PANEL 3 We see Lei and the young man staring at each other. He’s wearing a business suit as if dressed for a job interview but it’s at odds with the satchel he wears. Caption: She knows he saw it too. They move towards the pull of the others. PAGE 5, PANEL 4 We see an Asian-Indian girl (Sabina) with flowing, long, black hair, no biker’s helmet and wearing a biker’s leather coat. She’s riding a motorcycle through traffic. Caption: The Place – San Francisco, Union St. PAGE 6, PANEL 1 Long panels throughout page, borderless. We see Sabina swerving to on side overtaking a smart, silver car. She’s speeding and appears to drive recklessly but is not completely out of control. We get the impression that she is used to riding this way. SABINA (Thoughts): There was an earthquake. But no one else is panicking. PAGE 6, PANEL 2 We’re still with Sabina, she’s at the end of the street and the turning onto Van Ness Avenue is visible. She is riding in and out of the traffic cues. SABINA (Thoughts): They’re all shaken, shocked into silence. Even the people who’ve experienced it before felt something different. A deeper energy. PAGE 6, PANEL 3 Sabina switches lanes, her hair wild behind her. Caption: But the people had switched off from what had happened, the truth no longer in their grasp. Most didn’t even remember that there’d been an earthquake. PAGE 6, PANEL 4 Borderless still. Sabina turns right onto Van Ness Avenue. We can see Lei and John in the distant, John just slightly further away from Lei to one side of the panel. He’s leaning his head towards them as Lei looks clearly towards Sabina. Caption: The truth brought too many frightening possibilities. PAGE 6, PANEL 5 We stop the longer panels and return to a normal size. We see a group of Italian boys, two of them in their mid-twenties, dressed in a fashionable manner. Next to them on the left is a short, slightly young man, in about his late teens. He is dressed plainly and holds himself very nervously. His face is marked with worry and the sign of the Sony Metreon Cinema is above them. LUCIAN: I told you everything would be okay. TONY: I still think there’s something wrong. The earthquake, it just felt wrong... PAGE 6, PANEL 6 We get a close up on Tony. He is traditionally handsome, Italian and has black hair. He seems to be abnormally anxious. Lucian, his cousin, is next to him and Lucian’s male partner is on the other side. Lucian appears incredibly relaxed while his partner seems disinterested. LUCIAN: Tony you haven’t ever been in an earthquake before. It was just a mild tremor and there’s been no warning’s on the news. No reason to panic. END OF PROLOGUE. EACH CHAPTER WILL HAVE A COVER PAGE FULL LENGTH. CHAPTER 1 – BROKEN TIES PAGE 7, PANEL 1 We are confronted with Sabina, John and Lei. Sabina is on the edge of the panel with arms crossed, her eyes to one side as if she’s ready to run away. John seems eagerly close to Lei while Lei is the strongest character and is in the centre. She appears intelligent and determined and seems to be occupying the leadership role. We can see part of a university building behind them and also that the sun is setting behind them – turning the sky a reddish colour. No caption PAGE 7, PANEL 2 We see a close up of Sabina with her arms folded. Students are passing behind her casually. SABINA: So what was it? PAGE 7, PANEL 3 We switch to Lei who is still looking off into the distance as if expecting the world to disappear again. LEI: We don’t know. But whatever that world was I saw; it was old and close-by and no one else seemed to feel it. PAGE 7, PANEL 4 The image pulls back to show Sabina and John both looking at John oddly. Sabina looks almost disgusted. John seems amused. JOHN: World? PAGE 7, PANEL 5 We still see all three of them but Lei gaze is on Sabina in puzzlement. LEI: Neither of you saw it? PAGE 7, PANEL 6 We focus back on Sabina who is rolling her eyes and turning away. She is looking at an Asian man in the distance, slightly younger than her (later teens) who is wearing a biker’s jacket and is on a Harley Davidson superglide. Sabina: No. So what’s the plan? PAGE 7, PANEL 7 We see Lei turned towards Sabina but Sabina is still turned away towards the other biker who is waiting for her. LEI: I don’t know. We should find the others and all get together. Have you got cells? PAGE 7, PANEL 8 We see them exchanging numbers all with their cell phones out in front of them. PAGE 8, PANEL 1 We see Sabina getting back on her bike, John and Lei stood behind her. She’s draped in leather with a top showing off her midriff. PAGE 8, PANEL 2 John is leaning slightly in towards Sabina. JOHN: Don’t you have a biker helmet? PAGE 8, PANEL 3 Sabina starts up her bike. SABINA: Nah I got a death wish. I’ll catch up with you later. PAGE 8, PANEL 4 We see Sabina speeding away and the other bike following. PAGE 8, PANEL 5 We see Lei and John watching Sabina leaving. LEI: That girl’s in a hurry to get killed. PAGE 8, PANEL 6 John smiles at her. JOHN: Definitely. PAGE 8, PANEL 7 John leans in again. He’s looking at Lei now. JOHN: Well I guess I missed my job interview now. Do you want to get a drink or something? PAGE 8, PANEL 8 Lei looks at him nervously as she’s just realised that he’s attracted to her. LEI: I’ve er – got to finish a research project for tomorrow. Sorry. Speak to you later. PAGE 8, PANEL 9 Lei shrugs, her coat flapping in the world. PAGE 8, PANEL 10 Lei walks away. We see John stood alone now. JOHN: Good going John. Ditched by two girls in one day. PAGE 9, PANEL 1 We see an office from the inside where we can see out of a closed window. In the distance we can visibly see the purple-red light of sunset coming through. PAGE 9, PANEL 2 Close up on a young woman (Carly). She is short and curvy with blonde hair. Her hair is tied back and she is struggling with a large pile of paperwork at her desk. She has a worried but friendly expression and we can see the pressure getting to her. PAGE 9, PANEL 3 Carly’s boss is on the phone and he’s laughing loudly. His feet are on his desk and he’s leaning back in a very relaxed arrogant manner. PAGE 9, PANEL 4 Carly turns away, glancing out of the window longing to be outside. Caption: It was the only thing about her job that she liked. PAGE 9, PANEL 5 Carly’s pink jumped sleeve is in focus. Her left arm is seen right next to the papers in a foreboding manner. PAGE 9, PANEL 6 We see the papers scattering onto the floor as Carly knocks them over. She doesn’t seem to notice. PAGE 9, PANEL 7 Carly is leaning on her right hand to look out of the window seeming entranced by the world outside. Caption: Watching the last ray’s of the sun face into the blue-green horizon as if some artist had merged the colours, smearing everything in a natural mix of blues, reds and yellows. PAGE 9, PANEL 8 The panel grows darker, dimmer. Carly is still staring out of the window. Caption: The darkness always seemed foreboding but a part of her welcomed it. PAGE 9, PANEL 9 Carly turns back and notices the paper. We can see the view of the window behind her as she leans down. Caption: She could have sworn she’d seen smoke earlier. Even that had been beautiful. PAGE 9, PANEL 10 Carly is under the table cleaning up the paper. PAGE 9, PANEL 11 Carly hits her head on the desk. PAGE 9, PANEL 12 Her hand goes to her head, her face expressing pain and annoyance. PAGE 10, PANEL 1 She gets back to her chair still holding her head and glares at her boss. PAGE 10, PANEL 2 Her boss is laughing out loud again. We see Carly watching him. He is visible and looks daunting in the top left corner of the panel with Carly’s reaction taking up more of the panel. PAGE 10, PANEL 3 Carly marches over to him glaring. PAGE 10, PANEL 4 Carly is stood by her boss’s desk; his feet still sprawled out in front. Carly: Mr Toulson, can I speak to you? PAGE 10, PANEL 5 Boss is still talking loudly on the phone. Boss (Toulson): He was so... hammered; you should see the photos I’ve got on my phone. So... embarrassing – wait hold a sec. PAGE 10, PANEL 6 Toulson holds his hand over the mouthpiece. He’s wearing a crooked mustard coloured tie and has a creased grey collar showing indifference about his appearance. He looks up at her. Toulson: What is it? PAGE 10, PANEL 7 Mr Toulson leans forward in his chair even more looking very smug. He takes Carly’s hand his eyes showing an attraction to her.Carly looks more agitated. Carly: You asked me to finish this report. But it’s too much work. This is normally HR’s job. And besides I finished work 45 minutes ago. I just don’t think it’s fair to ask me to do this. Toulson: If you want to get anywhere in this company you have to take on the hard jobs. Be part of the team. But I get it you need a break. I’ll finish this call and we’ll relax for a bit. I’ve got some vodka in my drawer. What do you say we have a quick drink and you can finish the report on Monday? It’s not that urgent. PAGE 10, PANEL 8 Carly: Didn’t you do this with your secretary the other day? And aren’t you married. I was here late that night too. Remember!. Toulson: We’re both adults. What’s the problem? PAGE 10, PANEL 9 The focus is more on Mr Toulson whose expression is more serious now. Carly can’t seem to believe what’s he’s asking of her. Carly: It’s sexual harassment. It’s bad enough that you unload other people’s work onto me and whistle when I bend over and stare at me all the time but now you’re propositioning me. Toulson: So that’s a no then. PAGE 10, PANEL 10 Carly: Yes that’s a no. What do you think I am? Toulson: Well then Ms Richards. I suggest you get back to work. That report won’t finish itself and I want it finished for Monday. Urgently. PAGE 10, PANEL 11 Her mouth hangs open in surprise as Mr Toulson resumes his telephone conversation. Toulson: Sorry about that. What were you saying? PAGE 10, PANEL 12 Carly walks back to her desk with her back to him. She doesn’t sit down PAGE 11, PANEL 1 She suddenly grabs her computer with relative ease and throws it onto the floor in a large, borderless panel. PAGE 11, PANEL 2 We see the shards of the computer screen as it smashes and scatters over the floor. PAGE 11, PANEL 3 Her boss’s head turns very quickly as he hears the smash. PAGE 11, PANEL 4 We see the mess the computer has made, some of the papers had fallen too, the report scattered everywhere. PAGE 11, PANEL 5 Carly stand with a smile facing her boss. It’s now here time to look cocky. PAGE 11, PANEL 6 He stares at her. Carly: Report’s done Mr Toulson. PAGE 11, PANEL 7 She leaves the office grabbing her coat as she goes. PAGE 11, PANEL 8 We see now the mess in the office, the shocked boss and the closed door all in one frame. Caption: Carly left the office for the last time. PAGE 12, PANEL 1 Sabina’s dad, a frail elderly man is visible in a small apartment. He looks very vulnerable and ill. Lal Patel: Is that you Sabina? Where have you been? PAGE 12, PANEL 2 Sabina walks into the living room dressed in full Hindu clothing. Sabina: Yeah, Dad. It’s me. I just had some extra studying to do at the college. PAGE 12, PANEL 3 She helps her father as he tries to pick up a book he has dropped. PAGE 12, PANEL 4 1 of 2 small connected panels. We see into Sabina’s thoughts where she pictures he father in a hospital bed. PAGE 12, PANEL 5 2 of 2 panels. We see Sabina helping her father as he learns to walk with a walking frame. PAGE 12, PANEL 6 We are no longer in her mind. We see her sit her father down onto the settee. Sabina: Has the health visitor been today? PAGE 12, PANEL 7 Lal smiles at his daughter in a way that makes you think he isn’t fully aware of the things around him. Lal Patel: Don’t worry about me little one. I’m okay. PAGE 12, PANEL 8 Sabina frowns leaning in towards him. Sabina: You remember that I’m working tonight don’t you? I’ll cook you something before I go out. PAGE 12, PANEL 9 He appears to mumble something in Gujrati (Text should indicate this is incomprehensible). PAGE 12, PANEL 10 Same screen. But they are not looking at each other both seeming like they are keeping things back. Caption: The fact that she had never even enrolled at college. Nor did he realise that she hadn’t even graduated from high school but had dropped out several years ago. He thought she was a good girl studying to be a doctor and working every night to support her. PAGE 13, PANEL 1 A young man (Leo) and Carly are headed towards each other. It has just turned dark but the streets are very crowded. Carly heads the other way. Leo is African-American and is dressed in a business suit. PAGE 13, PANEL 2 Leo and Carly collide accidentally. Neither of them falls to the ground. Leo: What where you’re going. PAGE 13, PANEL 3 Carly looks up at him. She seems disoriented and confused. Carly: I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. PAGE 13, PANEL 4 His expression seems calmer as he sees her. Leo: It’s okay. What are you in such a rush for? PAGE 13, PANEL 5 She seems absolutely bewildered and doesn’t reply. PAGE 13, PANEL 6 She glances behind her as if something’s following her. Carly: I’ve been feeling a bit sick since the quake. Did you feel it too? Leo: Not much. PAGE 13, PANEL 7 He leans in his shoulders dropping. Leo: I felt something else though. It was a bit weird. PAGE 13, PANEL 8 Suddenly we see the entities again swarming around them, Carly huddling close to Leo. PAGE 13, PANEL 9 The world returns to normal and the two of them are still stood close to each other. Carly is gripping his arm in fear. PAGE 14, Full page. Carly and Leo walk away hand in hand. She looks like a college student and it’s the early evening. Plenty of streetlights light the way and its still reasonably busy but now cramped. Caption: Lei was halfway home when it happened again. PAGE 15, PANEL 2 The world turns into a bright, white place. Caption: The world disappeared and she was in a void. PAGE 15, PANEL 3 The entities are around her again. They seem friendly, close. It’s similar to when you see a group of older friends or family fussing over a young child. Caption; The creatures where there again but this time something seemed to separate them from her. PAGE 15, PANEL 4 Lei can see the others as if she’s looking through a mirror at them. She’s being shown them one at a time. In this panel the people she sees aren’t clear. Everything is out of focus. Caption: It was like looking through a mirror and seeing someone else staring back at you. PAGE 16, PANEL 1 We can see Lei looking at John sat in the library. The images are clear from this point. Caption: Lei, John, Sabina, Carly, Leo, Tony, Miguel PAGE 17, PANEL 5 Same picture but Lei seems to be reaching out towards the other people. Caption: The only one’s like her. Yet a part of her knew that other people had been affected by the quake in a different way. PAGE 17, PANEL 6 Lei’s thoughts can be heard. Each person seems to turn as if they hear her. Lei: We need to talk. Meet me at the Wong Wok restaurant on Filmore Street. PAGE 17, PANEL 7 Large Panel. The image of her Uncle’s restaurant appears in front of her replacing the other images. Caption: The image of her Uncle’s restaurant appeared in front of her in the non-existent mirror... PAGE 17, PANEL 8 Lei reaches out to the image in a very large panel. Caption: And Lei reached out, touching the clear picture in front of her. PAGE 18, PANEL 1 Lei is now outside the restaurant. It’s bright and the street lights are visible again. Caption: It was dark but the street lights blazed brightly lighting up the whole street with their radiance. PAGE 18, PANEL 2 Lei glances around. Everything is radiant and filled with life. PAGE 18, PANEL 6 We see a trio of elderly people. Caption: They were all children. Even the old ones. They had existed but for a fraction of time in the eyes of the universe. PAGE 19, PANEL 1 We go back to Lei again. She is still watching people. Caption: Yet they all walked around ignorant of how insignificant they really were. Delusions of grandeur... PAGE 19, PANEL 2 Lei walks forward. Caption: Lei moved forward. PAGE 19, PANEL 3 We see a large view of the red dragon above the restaurant which appears as if it’s really breathing fire. Caption: The neon dragon breathing fire. PAGE 19, PANEL 4 We see the top of the door where there’s an old-fashioned bell. Caption: The door of the restaurant had an old-fashioned bell which jingled as she walked in. PAGE 20, PANEL 1 Lei walks into the restaurant and we see her from the side appearing as if she’s in a trance. PAGE 20, PANEL 2 Lei speaks to her Uncle, a fairly short middle-aged man. PAGE 20, PANEL 3 Lei’s Uncle nods but its not clear what has been said. PAGE 20, PANEL 4 Lei sits down at a large empty table. PAGE 20, PANEL 5 This is split into several sections of each person arriving. We see them in this order: John, Sabina, Carly and Leo together, Miguel and an empty doorway at the end of this panel to indicate someone else should be there. Caption: They arrived quicker than Lei had expected. But someone was missing. PAGE 21, PANEL 1 Lei is looking at an empty seat. Lei: Where’s Tony PAGE 21, PANEL 2 Everyone turns to look at her. Sabina: Who’s Tony? PAGE 21, PANEL 3 Lei’s expression shows discomfort of slight embarrassment. She doesn’t want to explain more in case they think she’s insane. Sabina is in view with her head turned away from the as if she’s eager to leave. PAGE 21, PANEL 4 Sabina turns around to look at Lei. Sabina: What is this all about? PAGE 21, PANEL 5 Lei is glancing at Sabina as if she knows why the girl is in a hurry. Lei: I just thought that we should all meet and talk about how we’ve been affected, share our experiences... PAGE 21, PANEL 6 Carly and everyone looks puzzled. We can see her and Lei. Carly: Affected...? Lei: You know... by the quake You all felt it right? PAGE 21, PANEL 7 Everyone is looking at Lei as if she’s crazy. PAGE 21, PANEL 8 We focus back on Sabina. Sabina: Of course we felt it. It was an earthquake. PAGE 21 PANEL 9 We see a close up of Lei. Lei: I was talking about the other world. PAGE 21, PANEL 10 Miguel appears very nervous. We shift back to him. Miguel: I didn’t see any other world but my computer started acting weird. It was sort of typing on its own. PAGE 22 PANEL 1 We see a close-up of Leo who seems very upset with what it happening. Leo: Are you people crazy. You’re computer typing on its own? Other worlds? What are you people talking about? PAGE 22, PANEL 2 Lei turns her head sharply. She appears disconcerted as if pondering the deeper meaning of the events and why Leo doesn’t remember this. Lei: But then why – why did I know where you all were... Who you all were... Why did it want us all together? PAGE 22, PANEL 3 We move to John. John: It? Lei, what did you see. There’s obviously a rational reason for this. PAGE 22, PANEL 4 Sabina appears to be growing agitated. They all appear to be in some sort of denial about what it happening. Sabina: I didn’t say anything about other worlds and computers being possessed. PAGE 22, PANEL 5. We see Carly again. Carly: But why could we all hear her in our minds telling us to come here? PAGE 22, PANEL 6 Sabina looks more agitated and stand up to go. Sabina: I’ve had enough. I’ve got more important things to do right now. See ya. PAGE 22, PANEL 7 We see the same picture but Sabina has disappeared almost immediately. PAGE 22, PANEL 8 John is looking around to see where she is. John: Where did she go? PAGE 22, PANEL 9 We go back to Carly. Carly: Wh-what just happened?
