6  A LOVER’S LAST LETTER

The day, my love, is not very far
When pain and sorrow will bring my end
And that I’m vigorous, and young, and strong
I’ll not be able or willing to pretend
So with all my sorrow, and grief, and woes
In a dingy tomb I’ll quietly descend

But one day when you will realize
That your indifference did cause my demise
You’ll then be sorry and come to my grave
To say good things and to eulogize

But then maybe you’ll kick my grave
And laugh and say I wasn’t very brave
And how I liked to pester you
And how I used to yearn and crave

But whether you laugh or tears you shed
Or whether my fate you laud or dread
I will not matter; it’ll be too late
For I’ll be silent; I’ll be dead

                    AKHRI KHAT

Wo waqt meri jaan bohat dour naheen hay
Jab dard say ruk jaaen gi sab zeest ki raahaen
Aur hud say guzar jaay ga andoh e nihaani
Thak jaaen gi tarsi hoie naakaam nigaahaen
Chhin jaaen gi mujh say meray aansoo, meri aahaen
Chhin jaay gi mujh say meri bai kaar jawaani

Shaayad meri ulfat ko bohat yaad karo gi
Apnay dil e maasoom ko naashaad karo gi
Aao gi meri goar pay tum ashk bahaanay
Naukhaiz bahaaroun kay haseen phool charhaanay

Shaayad meri turbat ko bhee thhukra kay chalo gi
Shaayad meri bai sood wafaaoun pay hanso gi
Is wuz e karam ka bhee tumhaen pass na ho ga
Laikin dil e naakaam ko ahsaas na ho ga

Alqissa ma'al e gham e ulfat pay hanso tum
Ya ashk bahaati raho, faryaad karo tum
Maazi pay nadaamat ho tumhaen yaa keh musarrat
Khaamoash parha soay ga waamaanda e ulfat
