A funny thing happened the other night, I Googled the words ‘Lokoti Werewolf,’ to see what would happen. What are Lokoti Werewolves, I hear you ask? In my sci-fi, supernatural, romance novels called the Circulate Series, I write about time travelers who eventually ‘shack up’ with Werewolves. However in my imaginary world, there are different breeds of Werewolves; such as the European Werewolf, Asian Werewolf, North American Werewolf and of course, the Lokoti Werewolf. A couple of months back I had a nasty experience with plagiarism, so I wanted to see if any other websites besides my own, would come up mentioning these creations. As you can guess by this musing, a couple did. In my series, a main character called Elisha Worthall created SSIT – Supernatural Scientific Investigative Team – whilst studying at Cambridge University. Upon graduating, she and her investigative partner Xavier Bell, turned SSIT into a business venture. They moved from investigating haunted houses, ghost lights around stone circles and ESP; into researching vampires and werewolves. I thought it might be fun, to write up a couple of SSIT Reports that my characters could have written. I even put their names on them when posting on my writing websites. www.writing.com/authors/onaya3 Low and behold, I found a website where a couple of school kids (I’m not sure of their ages) had done a school report on the topic of Werewolves. The first part of the report looks like it ‘borrowed’ from Wikipedia, then one paragraph says; “other than the Hollywood werewolf, there are four main types of werewolves that are recognized around the world,” and lists my different breeds. http://kupika.com/diarypage.php?id=p490ad334e22ceq00o9o I did try to write this piece of fiction in the style of non-fiction, and it looks like my attempt was successful. However there’s just one thing that concerns me. I wrote; “Due to the predatory nature of the European Werewolf; when we filmed and scanned this breed in human form changing into Werewolf, this was done covertly by Elisha Worthall acting alone. Since European Werewolves are man-eaters, Elisha Worthall was able to use her Circulator ability to instantaneously phase out of danger, as soon as the Werewolf picked up her scent.” So if my mock scientific report was taken as ‘legit’, did they think the part about Circulators were real too? On one website, I saw somebody is a fan of Lokoti Werewolves and dispenses advice on them. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090417180106AAud4Xe Then on another, I found someone who thought my Lokoti Tribe were real and was trying to look them up. http://werecon.org/werewolves/pg/blog/Bruce When I contacted this individual to inform him that the Lokoti can be located in only one place – my imagination – he replied that I should tell this to a girl called Elisha, whom was writing about them! Woah, my head is spinning… it’s bizarre when you post your fiction on websites such as Writing.Com or Storywrite.com and expect only a small group of people to read them. Then like seeds, they spring up somewhere else as something entirely different. But I guess it's funny in a Monty Python way and when you recover from the shock, it literally turns into a LoL. "How did you go on your Math test today, Timmy?" -- "I only got 44% on fractions but I got 88% on my report on the Different Breeds of Werewolves." "Atta boy." ~~~~~ The Circulate Series Circulate © K.R. Smith, 1st ed. 2005 ISBN: 978-0-646-53776-4 Scent © K.R. Smith, 2010. ISBN: 978-0-646-53730-6 http://onaya3.blogspot.com/
