24  NO, NOT FOR LONG; NO, NOT FOR LONG

With crime and evil we going along
No, not for long; no, not for long

Misery, they say, will always be
It is after all our legacy
We’ll always be hungry; we’ll always be sick
Our poverty is something we’ll never kick
We’ll always have sorrow; we’ll always have pain
We’ll always have bondage; we’ll always have chain
To which I’ll say, no, never again

Nothing but ruin have we ever seen
And need for us is quite routine
But so it does not have to be
We have the power to intervene

O life is rough and can be rougher
But we do not always have to suffer
And we do not have to go along
And do not have to play the duffer
No, not for long; no not for long

                          URDU POEM
            CHAND ROAZ AUR MERI JAAN

Chand roaz aur, meri jaan, faqat chand hi roaz
Zulm ki chhaaoun maen dam laenay ko majboor haen hum
Aur kuchh dair sitam seh laen, tarhap laen, row laen
Apnay ajdaad ki meeraas say maazoor haen hum
Jism per qaid hay, jazbaat pay zangeeraen haen
Fikr mehboos hay, guftaar pay taazeeraen haen
Apni himmat hay keh hum phir bhee jiay jaatay haen
Zindagi kya kisi muflis ki qaba hay jis maen
Her gharhi dard kay paiwand lagay jaatay haen
Laikin ab zulm ki meeaad kay din thhorhay haen
Ik zara sabr keh faryaad kay din thhorhay haen

Arsa e dehr ki jhulsi hui weeraani maen
Hum ko rehna hay pay yuinhi toe naheen rehna hay
Ajnabi haathoun ka bainaam garaanbaar sitam
Aaj sehna hay, hamaisha toe naheen sehna hay

Yeh teray husn say lapti hui aalaam ki gard
Apni doe roaza jawaani ki shakistoun ka shumaar
Chaandni raatoun ka baikaar dehakta hua dard
Dil ki baisood tarhap, jism ki maayoos pukaar
Chand roaz aur, meri jaan, faqat chand hi roaz
