32  AND MAKE THE CHAIN A THING OF THE PAST

This darkness, oh, it will not end
And the golden moon. it’ll not ascend
Our pulse of life we can barely feel
On it, it seems, we cannot depend

This dark of night, so let it be
And let it extend our agony
For last forever it can’t, you see

O hear we still the sound of chain
And still we hear the cries of pain
And still they torture behind the walls
And blood from us still they drain

But it forever just cannot last
Together if we can hold on fast
And if we can somehow unite
Our tormentors we can outlast
And make the chain a thing of the past

                    URDU POEM
        AEY DIL E BAITAAB, THAHAR

Teergi hay keh umandti hi chali aati hay
Shab ki rag rag say lahoo phoot raha ho jaisay
Chal rahi hay kuchh is andaaaz say nabz e hasti
Donoun aalam ka nasha toot raha ho jaisay

Raat ka garm lahoo aur bhee beh jaanay doe
Yehi taareeki toe hay ghaaza e rukhsaar e sahar
Subhey honay hi ko hay aey dil e baitaab thahar

Abhee zangeer chhankti hay pus e parda e saaz
Mtlaq ul hukm hay sheeraaza e asbaab abhee
Saaghar e naab maen aansoo bhee dhalak jaatay haen
Laghzish e pa maen hay paabandi e aadaab abhee

Apnay deewanoun ko deewaana toe ban lainay doe
Apnay maikhaanoun ko maikhaana to ban lainay doe
Jald yeh satwat e asbaab bhee uthh jaay gi
Yeh garaanbaari e aadaab bhee uthh jaay gi
Khaah zangeer chhankti hi, chhanakti hi rahay
