    36  THEY SAY WE’RE FREE

This half-baked morning, this patchy light
No, it hasn’t brought the end of our night
We thought the sun was going to soar
But it’s not the day we were looking for
We thought somewhere in the endless sky
We’ll find a sun that’s bright and high
And on whose light we could finally rely

Yes, we were all very young and fresh
And subject we were to demands of flesh
And we were also very amorous
So the arms and bodies kept calling for us
But we were looking for the rising sun
And the quest of ours had just begun
And our job, we thought, was still not done

They say we’re now in full control
And that we’ve finally reached our goal
And now that we are all free to act
In the world we’ll play our noble role

So how come I still have the horrible pain
Which has been forever my life’s bane?
And why do I see no hope, no light
And why do I find no tangible gain?

It’s just as dark as it has ever been
This light that we see in not genuine
So let’s keep going, and let’s not stop
And one day our freedom we’ll finally win

                      URDU POEM
                  SUBH E AAZAADI

Yeh daagh daagh ujaala, yeh shabguzeeda saher
Wo intazaar that jis ka, yeh wo saher toe naheen
Yeh wo saher toe naheen jis ki aarzoo lay ker
Chalay thay yaar keh mil jaay gi kaheen na kaheen
Falak kay dasht maen taaroun ki aakhri manzil
Kaheen toe ho ga shab e sustmoaj ka saahil
Kaheen toe ja kay rukay ga safeena e gham e dil

Jawaan lahoo ki purisraar shahraahoun say
Chalay jo yaar toe daaman pay kitnay haath perhay
Dayaar e husn ki baisabr khaabgaahoun say
Pukaarti raheen baahaen, badan bulaatay rahay
Bohat azeez thi laikin rukh e saher ki lagan
Bohat qareen tha haseenaan e noor ka daaman
Subuk subuk thi tamanna, dabi dabi thi thakan

Suna hay ho bhee chula hay firaaq e zulmat o noor
Suna hay ho bhee chuka hay wisaal e manzil o gaam
Badal chuka hay bohat ahl e dard ka dastoor
Nishaat e wasl halaal o azaab e hijr haraam

Jiger ki aag, nazar ki umang, dil ki jalan
Kisi pay chaara e hijraan ka kuchh asar hi naheen
Kahaan say aaie nigaar e saba, kidhar ko gaie
Abhee charaagh e sar e reh ko kuchh khabar hi naheen
Abhee garaani e shab maen kami naheen aaie
Nijaat e deeda o dil ki ghharhi naheen aaie
Chalay chalo keh wo manzil abhee naheen aaie
