DUNCAN, BOB If It Moves, Salute It The war was over, but the G.I’s in a Tokyo pleasure house had just begun 34wto fight—for their women and against the Army establishment DUNSANY, LORD (SF) At the Edge of the World NEED DESCRIPTION FROM LIBRARY DRURY, ALLEN Advise and Consent In "Advise and Consent", Allen Drury brought us into the inner workings of the US Senate. While possibly a bit dated in some of its references, this novel is a spot-on condemnation of attitudes and prejudices found TO THIS DAY in the major media outlets, as well as dangerous attitudes held by certain persons in the political classes. A Shade of Difference In "A Shade of Difference" Allen Drury brought us into the inner workings of the United Nations. Capable of Honor He continued his excellent "Advise and Consent" series with a book that touched upon the overwhelming power of the media to form and force public opinion, and did so in a context (that of a violently divided Presidential nominating convention) which resonates true today. Come Nineveh, Come Tyre Shows the fragility of the American republic when subjected to the excesses of extremists, be they on the right or on the left and how easily the media and public can be mislead by charismatic or "righteous" leaders. The lessons herein apply in today's America just as much as they did in 1973--it can happen all too easily, leading us to the wrong places for all of the seeming "right reasons." Pentagon Follow the actions taken by the American military bureaucracy when faced with a crisis. In this case, the crisis is the Russian occupation of a sparsely inhabited South Pacific island for the purpose of building a submarine and missile base. However, the book's merit ends with that concept. Preserve and Protect The setting is Washington, D.C. The action begins when President Harley Hudson is killed in an air crash. The Speaker of the House becomes President and calls for a national committee to select new nominees for the coming election. The theme of this novel is violence in American life--a violence promoted and condoned by politicians who are fools, dupes or knaves. The Promise of Joy "The Promise of Joy" is set immediately following the ending of "Preserve and Protect" -- but with different results. Instead of the deaths of Sen. Knox and Mrs. Jason, it is Gov. Jason and Mrs. Knox who are killed -- and Senator Knox which ascends to the White House. EEEE EDEN, DOROTHY The Vines of Yarrabee Against the backdrop of the rugged Australian wilderness, a sweeping drama unfolds of the men and women who sought to tame this land.
