Words of love and devotion
cracked an armor of fright,
and earned the trust of a heart
that had never been light.

Out of that darkness came joy
to be loved so completely,
while gaining confidence in self
that was encouraged so sweetly.

From the depths of that heart
rose a glowing hot flame,
fueling emotions newly felt
and those urges to tame.

Those times became fewer
when soft words were spoken,
and that heart once so trusting
was so often broken.

Countless cries for attention
brought empty replies,
and then total rejection
without any goodbyes.

A fragile trust destroyed
by words meant to deceive,
and the heart that was on fire
is left to bleed and grieve.

Memories of those smiles
remain to tease and taunt,
and they refuse to abandon
remaining to stay and haunt.
