I am the Nursing Student

This is actually written to acompany the music of the song "The Enterainer" by Billy Joel

I am the First Year Student
and I know just where I stand
another annoying PAD to fill
and another pair of hands
Today i'm in the classroom
tomorrow i'm on the wards
But I know the game and you'll forget my name,
and I won't be here next academic year,
if I don't get me a pass.

I am the Second Year Student
and I've had to pay a price
Things I did not know at first
I learnt by doing twice
Fluid balance charts do haunt me
and I never get last say
I play darts with needle and syringe
and I clean commodes just like a pro
then I go my merry way.

I am the Third Year Student
I've been all around the wards
Seen all kinds of illnesses
from Asthma through to warts
I only know bed numbers
and I don't remember names
Ah but what the hell
you know it's just as well
'cause after a while and a thousand pills
it all becomes the same

Now I am the staff nurse
with my own patient work load
I'd like to spend a minute or two
but I can't stay that long
I've got to get to theatres
I've got relatives on the phone lines
Got to pay those fees to the NMC
and I always stay at the end of the day
and I just don't have the time.

Now I am a mentor
and I get my own student nurse
who trembels there before me
It's just a little perverese
'Cause It took me years to get here
But not that long ago
I was scared and a little unsure
innocent and a little demure
back when I was a student nurse.
